Got to have the drink on Thursday and I'm nervous as anything, had a scan today and they said baby's tummy was measuring a few weeks ahead but if the result is okay from the diabetes then it's nothing to worry about! But has anyone had similar and baby been okay?
How long to wait for results from the test ?
Have I done this to my baby with what I eat ? I do have a sweet tooth during pregnancy 🫣

Hello!

I had GD, found out around 26 weeks with DD, who is now a perfectly happy and healthy 10yr old moody monster.

Did you deliberately cause your placenta to restrict the performance of your pancreas and reduce your bodies ability to create and respond to insulin?

That's a rhetorical question, you did not cause GD, it's just unfortunate that that is how your body has responded to the presence of a placenta.

Things to know:

  • I got my results back within about 24 hrs of the test, they turn them around fast
  • if you do have GD you'll be referred to the diabetes team and given info about blood sugar monitoring, diet and the possibility of medication,
  • unless your sugar levels are really high they will aim for diet control first and monitoring before starting any medications.
  • if you have GD then your risk of getting it again in future pregnancies is higher, as is your risk of developing T2 diabetes.
  • in terms of diet, the key is to reduce (not eliminate) carbs, track what you eat so you can see what causes sugar levels to rise, eat more protein and good fat, pair carbs with protein (egg on toast, apple slices with peanut butter, cracker with cottage cheese etc)
  • exercise is also beneficial, a brisk 20 min walk after a meal helps process the sugar rather than letting it linger in your blood.
  • you will get more monitoring and scans, to check babies growth and the state of your placenta.
  • the medical professionals may recommend induction, this is often due to big baby, but also because GD can cause placenta quality issues making it more likely to fail if you go overdue.

Right now, you don't know if you have GD so really try not to panic, even if you do have it, it's manageable and you will have support.

My friend was tested for GD for the same reason (baby had a big tummy on scan). Test was negative. Baby is now almost 2, and no issues.

Thank you for your replies I've calmed down a bit worrying now, I've got extra growth scans but panicked because I thought maybe I'd had too many sugary treats and it would be my fault xx
