progesterone in early pregnancy following MMC

Hi! Has anyone been prescribed progesterone in early pregnancy following a MMC? If so - how did you go about this? I have seen the NICE guidelines recommend it and I am 6 weeks pregnant following a missed miscarriage in December. I have been researching that progesterone can be good but I don’t know the logistics of how to get this? Do I contact the GP and ask them or ask them to refer me to the early pregnancy unit? Will they do that? Thanks

Hey, I’m in the same boat as you but I’m 5+4 today! I had a MMC in December last year.
I have been prescribed progesterone, but I had a bit of spotting that worried me last week so went to the early pregnancy unit. I believe the criteria for progesterone is at least 1 miscarriage, and have had bleeding or spotting. They will need to do a scan to confirm intrauterine pregnancy.

I don’t believe they’ll prescribe it unless you have had any bleeding though, I’m not sure about other trusts but mine doesn’t, and the NICE guidelines suggest that is the criteria for it.

Hope all goes well for you in this pregnancy💓

Similar for me from last poster - I was prescribed it at EPU after attending with bleeding in early pregnancy. Previously had 3 miscarriages which I think is the guidance for my trust. I don't think the GP will prescribe but you can try asking for referral to EPU

I had a miscarriage in December which I suspect was down to low progesterone. I tried to get my GP to prescribe for when I next fell pregnant (still yet to happen 🤞🏼) but they wouldn’t. As previous poster has said you can get it prescribed if you are bleeding and have had a previous miscarriage but I didn’t want to wait to bleed again so I went to a private fertility specialist who prescribed it so I have it ready and waiting when I next get a positive test

That’s so helpful thank you. Can I ask how much it cost you if you don’t mind? I have private online GP appointments through my work so could try then but would depend how much it cost!

Ah I hope everything goes well for you! I feel very fortunate to have not had any bleeding etc so far but it’s so scary to think there’s a medication that could potentially help loads but we will see. I hope everything goes well for you. How are you feeling? I am absolutely terrified x

I had a previous missed miscarriage and I was prescribed it at 5+2 for my currently pregnancy (now 19 weeks) from emergency gynaecology at the hospital after having some cramping and spotting, they scanned me to make sure the pregnancy was in the right place first before giving me the prescription.

Prior to the spotting starting, as soon as I found I was pregnant I went straight to my GP to ask for progesterone as it took us almost two years to fall pregnant again after the MMC. My GP tried her hardest to get me it but she was told she wasn’t allowed to prescribe it unless I had bleeding and the pregnancy was confirmed to be in the correct place. Unfortunately a few days later I did start spotting but luckily emergency gynaecology scanned and prescribed me it.

I truly believe the progesterone saved this pregnancy so I would recommend it if you can get it prescribed! Of course it doesn’t work for everyone but it seems to help quite a few of us who have had previous losses.

Itsamummybear · 09/03/2025 20:22

Most likely by referral to your early pregnancy unit.
I was immediately under fetal medicine with my daughter as my waters broke with my son at 20 weeks and then sadly lost a baby before falling pregnant with my daughter. I called them and they referred me to EPU and I was prescribed progesterone which I stayed on until delivery xxx

Honestly terrified! I’m trying my best to just take each day as it comes, that’s the advice I’ve been given and it’s easier said than done😂 Just celebrating each milestone as it comes, and feeling hopeful that the progesterone will be the answer for us x

I went for an early scan on Friday just gone and I thought I was 6 weeks but sac was measuring 5wks so I think I ovulated a week later than normal. But due to me having 3 losses before they said they wanted to prescribe progesterone which I wasn't even aware of but the have sent me home with it and sent a letter to my doctors to put on repeat prescription now as I need to keep taking it till 16wks. The EPU said they only out people on it if you have 2/3 losses before. So have a chat with your doctor and see if they can sort it for you. Xxx

I had two miscarriages last year. I'm pregnant again. I phoned the epu as I didn't know how far along I was as I hadn't had a period since my last miscarriage and to enquire about progesterone. The epu got me in for bloods to check my HCG and to determine when would be the best time for an early scan. My HCG was over 100k so they scanned me the next day and said as long as the pregnancy was in the right place they would prescribe progesterone. It was and I was over 8 weeks! They have me 4 weeks on a hospital prescription and said to contact my GP about prescribing it until 16 weeks. I had an appointment with the pharmacist at my GP surgery and she sorted that out for me.

Copied from another thread so I don't need to type it out again.

We contacted the local private hospital and asked for an appointment with the gynaecologist. It was just a phone appointment in the end.
We said what had happened to us, that we wanted to try progesterone given we had done thorough research on what could have happened with the two we lost and that we had gone private as via the NHS we would need a third miscarriage before they did any investigations etc. He said we would need to go for a scan initially and when we asked how much would that be given we would be paying, he realised we were actually private patients and he just wrote out the prescription for progesterone and posted it to us that night.
We obviously had to pay for the appointment and the progesterone after that. I can't remember how much the appointment was but I think the actual progesterone was about £100-£120, which covered the first trimester, but then we managed to get a prescription from our normal GP after that.

We had it ready to go from the moment the positive test came through.

Progesterone helped us with our (now) rainbow toddler! :)

I had a MC in April last year, fell pregnant again in June but had some spotting at around 5 weeks so I went to the GP and they referred me to the Early Pregnancy Unit and because I had, had a MC before AND I had spotting in the new pregnancy, they prescribed it to me. They gave me the whole amount in one prescription and I was on it until 16 weeks :)

Kittenswhiskers · 10/03/2025 09:22

It worked for me, nhs put me on it
good luck op

DCmum95 · 11/03/2025 07:41

I have just got back from a&e, I had very light spotting last night so thought it was best to get checked. They did my HCG level and it was 658 which is very low for where I should be at 6 weeks. Back in for a scan tomorrow and then repeat bloods after 48 hours. Really looking like this is another loss xx

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you, is there a possibility you could just be earlier than you expected to be? Have they put you on progesterone yet? X

Thank you. Yes I could definitely be earlier than I think. I have just had a scan and they can’t see anything other than something on my left ovary which could be sign of very early pregnancy and my womb is thickened. But the issue is that I first got a very very faint positive on 1st March so from that point it should definitely have implanted into my womb by now. They won’t prescribe me progesterone until they can confirm a viable pregnancy on a scan. I’m waiting to see the nurse now but they are likely to send me away and either book another scan or just wait until / if my HCG levels rise enough to expect to see it on a scan. X

Hi. Can I ask if they could confirm location of pregnancy at 5 weeks? I need progesterone next time but they’re insistent on waiting until 6 weeks. This would be too late. Thanks in advance

emms38 · 15/03/2025 04:23

Hey, yes they could confirm everything was where it was meant to be, the gestational sac wand yolk sac was seen it’s just the baby wasn’t as it’s to early. You wouldn’t see anything till 6 wks. They have confirmed what was there was normal for 5wks. And now I’m booked in for next Friday to be scanned which by then baby should be there and heartbeat too. Also it’s never too late to start the progesterone. When I went for my scan going off my period o should have been 6wks they wouldn’t have scanned me earlier so I had to wait till 6wks too it’s just when I went for it everything was measuring a week behind. Xx

Well can you not go to your doctor and get them to prescribe it for you as I get mine through my doc’s now. If you have a thin womb lining and you require it x

Yeah they have said they will but not until 6 weeks. And by then it would be too late for me. I’m going to try and find a private scan clinic that do from 5 weeks. Once confirmed in the right place they will give it

No more spotting since starting the progesterone thankfully, got my 7+2 EPAU scan tomorrow very nervous, how are you?

mathanxiety · 20/03/2025 20:11

I had progesterone after three successive MCs over thirty years ago. I was in the US and under the care of an obstetrician. The threshold for the Rx was three MCs, and he prescribed progesterone which I started taking as soon as pregnancy was confirmed iirc.
