Down syndrome screening results mistake on letter?

Hi all,

I am 15 weeks pregnant with my first baby and am 27 years old.
I had my 12 week scan a week and a half ago and have today received my letter regarding the Down Syndrome, Edwards Syndrome and Patau Syndrome.

The letter stated that the screenings showed that I have a high chance of my baby having these conditions.

However, when I read on in the letter it shows the results which are
Down syndrome: 1 in 2900
Edwards & Patau: 1 in 5000

It goes on to say that there are no further tests needed.

I called the midwife team this morning and she thinks that the first paragraph telling me that I am high risk must be an error as the figures included are low risk. I have to wait until Monday for them to call me back, but I am so annoyed.

There is obviously an error somewhere on the letter as it completely contradicts itself. But now I have been left feeling worried and anxious about it all and to be honest, it has totally ruined my weekend receiving that this morning.

Has anybody else experienced something similar?

I haven’t but just wanted to say that your midwife is likely to be right. Something like this should be double checked before it’s sent out! When my test results came back as very high, a midwife came round to the house to deliver the letter, which really helped as I could talk to her straight away.

Sorry this has caused confusion and stress for you. Obviously you need clarification on the correct test results. Then you'll be know clearly if you are high or low risk.

I'd assume you are low risk and the odds stated are correct. And that the first paragraph has been left in error. Not an easy feeling and you won't know for sure until Monday, but try not to worry x

Thank you both for responding.

Im just so annoyed about it (emotions probably heightened due to the pregnancy lol) but with such a sensitive topic surely they would proof read the letter.

I would imagine that it was a typo as it is probably quite unlikely that the rest of the letter will be a mistake, it's more likely that the first paragraph has been copy and pasted wrong. Apparently from what I've read high risk letter will come within 3 days but this has taken around 11 days.

I guess I'll have to wait until Monday and drive myself mad with worry! X

Sound alike a copy and paste error. You have called your midwife and she has reassured you. No need to worry any more. Everything is fine. Don’t forget you will have other scans too.

How horrible for you, OP!
I'm of the same mind as PP and your midwife.
Copy and paste error, probably, but so disconcerting and upsetting to see the words in black and white.
I'd really try to put this to the back of your mind, until Monday, when you can get proper clarification, hopefully, and apply the reasurrance of the specific numbers rather than the contradictory sentence above it.

I hope you can manage to enjoy the rest of the weekend.

I don't think they inform you by letter if you are high risk, they give you a call a couple of days after the test so I think you're fine 😊
