posterior low lying placenta

Hi mums.

I've just had my 20 week scan and was told that the placenta is posterior lying low.

I'm just wondering if anyone else had this and the chances of it moving before full term. I'm so worried.
I have a 10 year old and this is my second pregnancy obviously I've never heard of this happening as ignorance is bliss. But any advice or reassurance would be appreciated!

I had a friend who had this at 20 weeks and it moved by 32 weeks.
Not sure if there's any statistics out there on the chances of that but I think I heard they are pretty good as there's still plenty of growing and stretching to go.

I’ve got one this time - third baby. They’ve said it’s v likely to move. I’m going for a check up scan this week. I’m not too worried as I’m having to have an elective c section.

just wanted to say you’re not alone! But yes they likely move. Any bleeding you just go in right away though

I had placenta previa and vasa previa and the baby was fine. So even if it doesn’t move up you have overwhelmingly good odds of everything going well.

Thanks!! Actually feel alot better knowing I'm not the only one. This is all new. Probably just worrying over nothing. It's always so stressful thinking the whatifs.

My placenta is posterior and low lying, completely covering my cervix, found when I had my 20 week scan. Referred to fetal medicine unit where I had a more detailed scan, this was at 26 weeks, it was still in the same position, I'm going back for another appointment in two weeks time to see if it has moved, if not I'll be having a c section which I've been told will be about 37/38 weeks. I've been told it's 50/50 if it moves or not.

MightyGoldBear · 04/03/2025 15:38

I had this in my 3rd pregnancy. It moved up and I was able to avoid having a c section. I think the stats are pretty high that most do move up.

I had a full placenta praevia. I was told that the majority of them move but I had a scan at 34 weeks and it hadn't moved at all and, as we lived a long way from the hospital, they wanted to keep me in. I hadn't prepared DD1 for this scenario at all and I needed to organise some things at home and managed to persuade them to let me go home for a couple of days but then I was admitted on bed rest until my C section at 38 weeks.
I was completely unprepared for the weeks of bed rest. I thought I had read up on the condition but didn't see this anywhere (It was 2005 and I think I read some books rather than the internet).
I hadn't had any bleeding and the midwives and obstetrician kept questioning me about this (I really would not have lied!). Apparently because babies put on up to half a pound a week last 4 weeks the chances of placental abruption can increase substantially at this stage. Anyway a planned caesarean was the only option but everything went smoothly and I had a healthy daughter.
Incidentally placenta praevia is the only pregnancy condition covered by BUPA because the C section is not a matter of opinion, it's 100% the only option, and so my workplace BUPA did fund the delivery.

I had this. Something like 80-90% move by the 32 week mark. Mine didn't so I had another scan at 36 weeks and an ELCS at 39+1. It was fine.

Some people do have issues such as bleeding and find themselves on bed rest in the third trimester. It might be a good idea to prepare your hospital bag a bit earlier than usual.

I had no problems at all but was quite careful to avoid heavy lifting. Was also advised to avoid flying and sex but this was 10 years ago so the advice may have changed.

Mo10988 · 04/03/2025 20:06

I haven't been referred yet. But I've an appointment at 28 weeks, not sure if they will see me before that for a check up for the position. I feel like this is all new again (and mostly scary) lol. because its been 10 years since I had my last.
Hope all goes well for you!

I had low lying with both my pregnancies and low lying anterior with previous one. Currently 5 weeks pregnant again and I'd imagine that it'll be low lying again. Mine moved both times. I think most do. But just try and enjoy every moment 🥰

YoungMacDonald · 04/03/2025 20:33

Posterior placentas don't move as much because your uterus mainly stretches from the lower front. There's not a lot of stretching going on at the back.

Mine was low posterior for both babies and neither moved far enough away for a vaginal birth.

Rainbowsunshine81 · 04/03/2025 21:24

I never had it in my last pregnancy and wasn't expecting it when I had my 20 week scan, all new to me too. Most likely be monitored a bit more to keep an eye on it.

Nifler · 04/03/2025 21:42

Mine is low lying and slightly covering cervix - though anterior. I’ve also worried about it (20 weeks currently) and being rescanned at 32 weeks to see if it’s moved. Hopefully it will and hope yours does too - 90% do apparently

Avie29 · 05/03/2025 07:18

hey, my last pregnancy my placenta was low, was told if it didn’t move i would need a c-section, i had a scan booked for 34 weeks to check placenta position and it had moved out the way enough for me to avoid a c-section, birth went really well, try not to worry xx

Waterlilysunset · 05/03/2025 21:49

@Mo10988 had my additional scan today and got told the placenta had moved up! So I’m in the clear. Good luck to you, I think stats are on your side x
