Hi everyone,

I'm currently 28 weeks and have just weighed myself and found out I’ve gained 10kg! I’ve gone from 55kg to 65kg…I’m shocked as I’ve been quite healthy eating home cooked healthy meals full of wholefoods and protein this whole pregnancy. I’ve definitely been eating more than usual in 2nd trimester, but I’ve not been snacking on junk or going crazy.

I used a few weight gain calculators online which have said I’m gaining more than I should at this point. I’m so anxious that I’m going to gain much much more in my third trimester and not sure what to do :( I can’t exercise as I have placenta previa. I’m walking lots, and I generally feel good in myself, but exercise is off the cards.

Did anyone else experience gaining more than they should? And if so, how quick did it drop off you? Thank you!

I had an SI joint injury when pregnant, plus a praevia and subchorionic haematoma. I was a bleeder. I also was climbing the walls as I am used to exercising hard. So I walked on a treadmill, at full incline. It was really good cardio and next to no impact. Might make you feel less worried. Also, I wouldn’t jump on the scales. Just go by how you feel and keep your food intake healthy and not excessive.

I put on all my weight in the second trimester.

First trimester I lost 9lbs due to sickness and food aversions.

Third trimester I've gained maybe 2lbs max up till now (I'm 36 weeks). The sickness is back and I've got no appetite at all/ get full extremely quickly/ the acid reflux puts me off eating. It's actually becoming a struggle to eat anything at all.

Second trimester, I had an insatiable appetite and craved anything and everything. I also had the biggest sweet tooth. I put on over a stone and a half between weeks 18 and 28.

As per others, I gained most of the weight first and second trimester. Very little in the third in both pregnancies. Just keep an eye on it and don't over eat.

Your blood volume has increased, the amount of fluid in your body has naturally increased, the weight of the baby is almost negligible but the rest is really normal for a pregnancy. It's not "weight" in the traditional sense. I put on loads and lost it after baby was born. It's a fascinating read if you want to go down a google rabbit hole.

I’m one of those annoying types that didn’t gain much weight - 20 pounds exactly each time. But I have friends that absolutely piled on the weight and they were fine. If you’re not overeating, there’s not much you can do about it.

You sound really healthy and happy. You should not think twice about a number on a scale. Maybe chat it through with your midwife and hopefully they will reassure you. It sounds to me like you are doing everything right and this is the right gain for you.

Is baby measuring fine? That's all that matters. I've only gained 4kg at 29 weeks, which according to all calculators is "not enough" but baby is not even measuring small - just above 50th centile. I think calculators are mostly as bogus as due dates, as UK/USA weight recommendations are different from Portugal or Japan, and French due date is calculated based on 41w+6 days opposed to 40w in UK.

Ahh, I think everyone responds differently to pregnancy. Apart from on MN where everyone seems to lose three stone! 😂

I’m 36 weeks with number three and had definitely gained at least 10kg by 28 weeks this time and with my previous pregnancies. Even though I vomited 4-8 times each day for the first 20-22 weeks every time! Beige carbs were the only thing I could tolerate and the only thing to take the edge off the vomiting, so I wasn’t even managing to eat my usual healthy diet like you are! Vomiting also stopped me from running and cycling as much as usual as I would just throw up, so only able to handle walking (and throwing up into bins or the carrier bag in my pocket).

If I’m honest, I don’t feel particular comfortable with it, but I am generally not keen on pregnancy - aware I’m very lucky, but I don’t get on well with it. FWIW, I have started each pregnancy with quite a low BMI (17-18) and I think I’ve been back to my usual weight within 3-4 months with the last two. In fact, the combination of breastfeeding and walking a lot on maternity leave has left me losing way too much weight and struggling to maintain it. Hoping for a happy medium this time.

Cheezewizz · 03/03/2025 15:05

I wouldn’t give it much thought, I gained 4 stone in my first pregnancy 😂 I was baffled as I vomited after every meal until 7 months, and then second time round i gained 15lbs which means I probably lost weight whilst pregnant.

W0tnow · 03/03/2025 15:10

I put on 20kg with both my pregnancies. Odd as my second pregnancy was twins (born 38 weeks). Back to 56kg now.

Thanks so much for the reassurance everyone! I think now I’m in third trimester I’m just going to ditch the scales and hope for the best tbh. I feel generally good within myself and to be honest with you, when I look in the mirror I don’t feel unhappy/my clothes still fit everywhere (but the bump)…it’s just watching the scales go up which has been alarming as I’m like WHERE is this coming from! I do get tested for gestational diabetes tomorrow (I have PCOS) so I am hoping that baby is okay and this isn’t why I’m gaining so quickly. It’s reassuring to hear a lot of you managed to get rid of the excess weight / that the calculators are a load of rubbish. Thanks everyone!

As others have said everyone responds differently all you can do is what you're doing. It's no reflection as to how long it may take to loose and a lot could water weight etc. On a side note if baby measuring bigger make sure to do pelvic floor exercises!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 04/03/2025 07:18

My body hated being pregnant and retained water and gained weight happily throughout. I was 4 stone heavier at 40 weeks but lost 2 stone giving birth. It took about a year to get back to my original weight.
