Elective c section

I've had my consultant appointment due to 2 previous emergency c sections, I was kind of expecting him to say it's up to me whether I try vbac or elective c section but he said c section is safest option given I've already had 2 and that they don't really induce or advise vaginal birth anyhow I've a few questions and hoping someone else who's had a elective can help me ?

  • do I need to make a birth plan or do I just say to the surgeon I'd like this or that? It's regarding holding the baby up so we can see if we have a little boy or girl ?
And also I'd really like to see the placenta, and get a photo I didn't get chance with my other two, although I understand this isn't important on the grand scheme of things !

Also what do I need to pack ? Obviously pads and big knickers comfy clothes etc but what else would I need ?

You wouldn't think I've had two babies via c section already but I've heard elective is completely different to emergency c section ! Thank you in advance xx

They come round and introduce themselves beforehand. They explain a few things and ask if you have any questions. You can tell them then what you want but I’d also definitely mention it again once you go into theatre. Don’t be afraid of repeating yourself! They asked if we wanted dad to announce the sex or the surgeon, we didn’t care to be honest and said for them to do it. Once baby was out they actually asked again if dad wanted to announce it and it was amazing (I wasn’t expecting a girl!). He also took the most amazing photo of her just coming out. Get your birthing partner well prepped!

Ooh, also take peppermint tea!

no personal experience, but am an obs anaesthetist... so long as the baby looks ok, it's completely normal for the surgeon to hold them up for you to see. Obvs if the baby looks a bit stunned by it all they may need looking after before they get held up. If you're waiting til the date to find out whether it's a boy or girl keep reminding people - we do try really hard not to give it away if we know it's a surprise!

take a camera/phone if you want pics. A lot of places have bluetooth speakers so if you want your choice of music take some (maybe ask about the set-up nearer the time).

the midwife is usually the one dealing with the placenta once it's out - let them know you want to see it. HTH.

Elective is fantastic. Way less stressful. I was so grateful.
