Gallbladder flare, 9weeks pg and extreme nausea

Looking for advice on safe foods that won’t make me even more nauseous.

im on anti emetics due to severe nausea in pregnancy and I’ve recently been advised to follow strict Mediterranean diet due to my gallstones- at least 9 fruit and veg a day.

normally I love eating Mediterranean diet but this pregnancy has me dry heaving whenever I so much as smell a vegetable.

my nausea decreased last week because I had stupidly been eating really bland foods like chips, breaded chicken, plain carby and fried stuff.

last night an omelette tipped me over the edge and I was awake until 3am with a gallbladder attack - likely due to my food choices. Paracetamol eventually took the edge off slightly and I fell asleep but I feel dreadful.

still in a lot of pain today and also feeling sick as darent eat. I feel my gallbladder is grumbling

can anyone recommend plain low fat foods that are gallbladder safe and won’t make me want to be sick? I’ve been advised to avoid all white complex carbs such as rice and pasta etc too.

miserable!

That sounds awful, poor you. Who told you loads of fruit and veg is the way ahead for gallbladder, though? I beg to differ!

Not sure what you are allowed while pregnant but Buscopan, Peptobismol, and ondansetron are my go to. Allergy tablets can help.

My surgeon told me to follow that diet, to try and avoid needing any intervention when pregnant.

it’s so painful again this evening, it’s as though it’s grumbling. Normally would take buscopan but that’s not allowed when pregnant sadly

Really? All I lived on before having mine out was ryvita, baked potatoes with cottage cheese and toast.

After a horrendous night and my nausea getting worse I’ve seen the GP this morning. I’m barely eating or drinking anything.

they’ve changed my anti sickness in the hope it means I can eat the right sorts of foods. In the meantime I’m taking my first sick day in 3 years to try re hydrate and sort myself out. I feel miserable :(

Hope you feel better soon.

Really sorry OP, not what you're going to want to hear, but my gall bladder got to the point where eating anything at all could trigger an attack - which is when I had it removed.

But I find the advice you've been given quite odd, isn't the Mediterranean diet quite olive oil heavy? Are you doing low fat?

I'd eat carbs with mine, but not fried foods.

Have you had a scan since its got worse, to check it's not inflamed?

Band3benefits · 03/03/2025 14:33

@GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut I’m kind of expecting it to worsen until it comes out, so it’s helpful to know from someone who has been there that I’m kind of on the right lines! My next appointment with the surgeon is already booked for 6 weeks after my due date so I think they’re thinking it too.

this baby was a much wanted surprise- we were about to start funding fertility treatment after 3 years of trying, and I was toying with having my gallbladder removed first. We were fortunate enough I’ve fallen on naturally but it’s unexpected due to the infertility, so I guess I’m stuck dealing with the gallbladder now aren’t i

im not using any fats to cook food unless it would stick, then using a bit of fry lite. No dressing on salads etc.

i might try eating simple things like new potatoes with a lean protein (although the mere thought of chicken breast makes me want to puke!) - a lot of people are saying they still ate carbs and seems to be the same for you as well? Is there anything else bland you can remember eating?

I normally love food, and healthy veggies fruits etc but I just can’t face anything like that at the moment

I've got other digestive stuff going on that affects what I can eat.

But from memory when I was feeling crap I ate mash (just potato), bread (no butter), soup - lots of the baxter's veg ones are low fat, white rice.

But if I had any pain at all, however slight, I just didn't eat anything at all.

I did drink hot water with lemon juice in it, that felt like it helped a bit. And took buscopan but I don't think you can take that in pregnancy.

I'm so sorry, I had gallstones that flared up in pregnancy, it's horrific.

I ate fish, sweet potato, olives, hummus with breadsticks or veg, feta cheese, salad, tuna, brown rice, noodles and bread. Not sure if any of those appeal to you. When me and my partner were researching safe foods, we found that olive oil was fine.

Because you're having pain that is lingering after an attack please keep your eye out for signs of a blocked duct, ie pancreatitis and jaundice. I was hospitalised not long after the birth of my baby with both and had my gallbladder out a few weeks ago. The symptoms are yellowing of the skin and eyes, dark urine, pale stools, lingering pain in the gallbladder/pancreas area, a temperature, feeling nauseous or being sick etc. Please keep an eye.

Good luck x

Sympathy I had this with my eldest while pregnant. I had a planned C-section but got sepsis 2 months post partum. So really keep an eye on symptoms. Towards the end anything set me off tbh. Nearly had pre term labour with it so scary! Take all the oramorth!
