Hi everyone.....interested in hearing your opinion on the best way to prepare formula at night

long story short I don't want to traipse up and down from kitchen to prep formula( two young dogs who will bark all night if disturbed)...I did buy a tomee tipee prep machine for the nursery...I tested it and the hot shot didn't go to 70c so now completely put off this. keen to hear people's opinion of the nuby rapid cool? considering just putting a kettle in our room and using rapid cool but if anyone has any better ideas or comments please let me know first time mum 36 weeks thought I had is sussed and now I don't!! thank you

We did room temperature water with DC2 and that worked for us and DC. DC never knew a warm bottle.

I thought you had to use boiling to kill bacteria?

We take a thermos flask of boiling water up and use a rapid cool. Works well for us as nice and quick not having to wait for kettle to boil

Used to pre make before bed 1 or 2 bottles with boiling water, leave to cool for a bit then put to back of the fridge, take out as needed and microwave with lid off for 15 secs to take chill off. Worked wonderfully

Iloveeverycat · 28/02/2025 17:53

You can get kettles that only heat to 70c so you can use straight away. I am afraid I don't know about the rapid cool we just used iced water in a flask to cool down as it didn't exist then.

You could take a flask of freshly boiled water and a bottle of cooled boiled water up to bed and just replicate what the perfect prep does - hot shot of water>70 degrees and formula powder, shake well, then add a measured amount of cold water to make it the right temperature to drink.

We pre make the nights bottles and put at the back of the fridge which is set at 2 degrees. We bought a bottle warmer off vinted which warms it up in 3 minutes! By the time we've changed his nappy, the bottle is ready x

Used to take up a thermos of boiling water (which we’d never used for anything else), wee measuring bottles, pre measured cold/room temp water and pre measured powder. Measure the nearly boiling water in the bottle, add powder, shake, top up with the cold water and shake again. The same as the prep does but cheaper and safer I think! Worked well for us.

We've been using the rapid cool in the day and really like it but at night currently we're using ready-made formula, yes it's expensive but not having to wait for kettles etc.. is working for us overnight. Generally once opened the bottles can be kept for 24 hours in fridge so we get several feeds out of a bottle (DD is 4 weeks old)

HappySpade · 28/02/2025 18:44

Yes, boiled the water at some point in the day, filled enough bottles for the day, and then left on the counter.

But bottles can only be left out of fridge for 2 hours.

It's the bacteria that is potentially in the formula powder that is the problem, not the water (although it's good practice to use boiled water for young babies). The formula powder has to be mixed with very hot water (over 70°) to kill any harmful bacteria that might be in it. Mixing it with room temperature water is risky.

Thanks folks. DC is 11 now so things worked out with no adverse effects

My eldest is 17 and I remember doing this and it was actually advised by the midwife to do it like this. I fed my first three children this way if I was going out and would be due a feed but got a Tommee Tippee machine for fourth baby. All my kids were fine. I think research must be done all the time and so the guidelines change but in all likelihood it's probably fine. People can read the guidelines and make up their own minds.

I took a thermos flask to bed and a pot of formula and then would make it up when needed. Then I would cool the bottle in a sink of cold water while I changed him and then it was normally ready.
