Maternity Leave/Owning own business - How?!

I run my own business, 3 other employees. It is busy and doing well but a large part of it relies on me. The other employees are good at their roles but I do the majority. It isn't something that you could just stop, work generally comes in about a year in advance and it is cyclical alongside other more reactive extra projects too.

I earn a lot more than my husband, he is a farmer so that is all consuming 7 days a week every day of the year. When I am not at work I help on the farm, before and after work, weekends etc.

I just cannot work out how we could have a baby. I don't actually employ any other women and the men i do employ are older, have grown up children so we've never had a maternity leave policy or anyone go on maternity or any extended leave. Obviously, its my business I could do what I wanted in that regard but its more I don't see how I can not be in the business for any period of time. The most I'm ever not here is a week! I'm at the age (40) where we can't really wait but I'm also terrified of finding out I'm pregnant and not knowing how the business can work without me.

Surely other people do this and manage?!!

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Can you deputise to your best worker or hire mat leave cover

You train up employees to be able to cover for you. What would have if God forbid you got sick or had an accident...it's not good to be so reliant on one person

katmarie · 28/02/2025 16:43

You need to find a solution to this because it's really not good business practice to have any business solely reliant on one person, it's too high a risk and makes you and your employees more vulnerable.

My advice would be to either upskill one of your current staff or hire a trainee deputy manager and teach them everything they need to know to be you when you are not there. You need to do it sooner rather than later, maternity is not the only reason you might be out for an extended period of time, and there are plenty of scenarios where you won't get 9 months notice that you need to take leave.

Delegate!

Balancing maternity leave while owning a business can be challenging, but it also comes with a business advantage—flexibility. Unlike traditional jobs, you can set your own schedule, delegate tasks, and plan ahead for smoother operations. Automating processes, outsourcing work, and leveraging passive income streams can help maintain stability. The business advantage of using these strategies is that your company continues running while you focus on your family. Have you planned your maternity leave while managing your business?
