Did you get told the sex at 12 week scan?

Just that really. I've heard mixed things with some people saying they are and others saying the NHS never do it until the second scan.

NHS will never do it, and even private scans are unreliable at this gestation.

JellyMouldJnr · 28/02/2025 16:05

I’ve never heard of getting the sex at 12 week scan. Only 20 weeks.

My midwife told me NHS don't tell you anymore (not sure how true that is) but we got a private scan at 15+3 and was very clearly a boy for us, and has been clear at every scan since! 12 weeks is very early to find out

Redfred00 · 28/02/2025 16:26

No. I think 16 weeks at the earliest.

Dinosaurus86 · 28/02/2025 16:33

At my NHS 12 week scan for DC1 they gave us a guess (obviously saying that far too early to be certain). We had just asked if it was ever possible to tell so early. They were right. I suspect it depends on your sonographer and the particular hospital’s policy.

Waterlilysunset · 28/02/2025 16:36

Not but they had a guess at my 15 week scan

MarigoldExpress · 28/02/2025 16:38

Yes, but not in the UK. We were asked at the 12 week scan both times (at different places) if we wanted to know, and told it would be about 80% accuracy. First pregnancy we said yes and it did turn out to be correct (second pregnancy we said no because we wanted a surprise at birth).

sel2223 · 28/02/2025 16:41

I was abroad for my 12 week scan and the sonographers 'educated guess' was wrong 😅

The NHS won't tell you at 12 weeks, even private clinics normally say 14 weeks at the very earliest and even then it's not guaranteed (a lot of places won't do it until 16 weeks)

Pineapplewaves · 28/02/2025 16:43

No, had to wait for the 20 week scan.

bugalugs45 · 28/02/2025 16:48

If you're desperate to know a blood test ( private ) will tell you . My colleague had it at 6 weeks, not sure why she needed to know so early but was correct both times

user1474315215 · 28/02/2025 16:48

My DD was pretty sure she could see that the baby was a boy at her 12 week scan. She asked the sonographer if she was seeing what she thought she was seeing and the sonographer said they could never be sure at that stage, but they thought so. DGS is 7 now!

Moon30 · 28/02/2025 16:50

Never heard of being told at a 12 week scan. I had a scan at 16 weeks with my twins and was told then but we was told not to buy anything until they confirmed the sex at our 20 week scan just to be safe

justanothercrapbedtime · 28/02/2025 17:02

With my singleton and twins we had a relaxed guess with the sonographer on the NHS - it was clear I was happy either way whatever they turned out to be though - no cultural pressure I suppose you could say so it was a bit of fun rather than anything else - all turned out to be correct at 20 weeks

Smartiepants79 · 28/02/2025 17:03

No, we could have found out at 20 weeks.

Ddakji · 28/02/2025 17:04

My hospital didn’t even tell us at the 20 weeks scan, that was their policy. So if you wanted to know, you’d have to go private.

MaltipooMama · 28/02/2025 17:29

I've never know the NHS to confirm sex at 12 weeks, it's always 20 as far as I'm aware! So the only two options to find out sooner are SneakPeak blood test which you can do from six weeks (I've done this twice and it's been accurate both times!), or the private scan clinics do it from around 15 weeks as well

remaininghopeful23 · 28/02/2025 18:02

Far too early to tell. Any private scanning places that claim that they can tell this early are after your money😅 Only reliable way to tell this early is NIPT.

Catsansan · 28/02/2025 20:05

I was at 11 weeks 6 years ago!

Essexmumma1720 · 28/02/2025 20:22

We asked at our 12 week NHS scan and they told us our baby was a girl and they were right 🩷

Sierra26 · 28/02/2025 21:07

Another odd one out here… we were asked at our nhs 12wk scan if we wanted to know and they told us (with caveat it was still early). They were right.
