Placenta previa grade 3

Hi,

I’m really scared right now. I’m 26 weeks pregnant, and a couple of weeks ago, I was diagnosed with placenta previa grade 3. The sonographer told me that it most likely won’t move and that I’ll need a C-section.

I’ve come to terms with needing a C-section and the possibility of bleeding, but I recently read that placenta previa increases the risk of vasa previa, and I don’t think they checked for that. Now, I’m really scared that I might have vasa previa and that something could go wrong with my baby.

Has anyone had a similar experience? If you had vasa previa, how and when did they diagnose it?

Thank you so much for sharing your experience!

I don’t know what the grades are- is yours previa and a bit to the back?

Mine was anterior and previa. It was fully over my cervix at 20 week scan with no gap. However because it was also anterior by 32 weeks when my bump was big it had moved up enough to not be an issue.

They say any bleeding and contact your hospital. I had a bit of bleeding at 26 weeks but I think it’s because I pushed myself. I didn’t have any after that.

I don’t know what vasa is, I never heard of it when I got told about mine.

Hi there, it's a midwife. I understand the difference between placenta previa and vasa previa. It's not appropriate for me to give medical advice over Mumsnet. I suggest you go to your Maternity Assessment Unit with your worry and ask them to explain. No one should be sitting at home worrying like this. Please go in and ask to be seen. In my professional opinion, it could wait till 9 am tomorrow morning. This is the time Maternity assessment units are usually quieter so hopefully it wouldn't be a long wait for you. If at any time you notice bleeding from down below then call an ambulance. Those things are rare but they do happen. I hope it helps

Please rest assured that vasa praevia is exceedingly rare. I work in one of the busiest maternity units in Europe and have seen a total of 1 in 10 years as a midwife. Of course this is anecdotal, but just wanted to put your mind at ease if you can take any comfort in that. The best thing to do is ring up and ask to speak to someone on your own care team about it, particularly if you have a contact in the fetal assessment unit where you were scanned.

Hi, I have at the moment complete placenta prevail, completely covering the cervix, found at my 20 week scan, they also queried vasa previa. I got referred to the fetal medicine unit and had a more in depth scan, both external and internal. Placenta is still covering the cervix, could not see vasa previa. They said it could move up and I have another scan when I'll be 31 weeks, my midwife thinks if it's not moved by then, probably a c section which will be about at 37 weeks.
At the fetal medicine appointment I got a really detailed report, they checked everything, such as the weight of the baby, what centile they are on etc. To keep an eye out for spotting etc and to contact the maternity assessment unit and tell them I have placenta previa.

I have a posterior placenta to the left also. Did they say anything about being referred to the fetal medicine unit?

Hi I’m 33 weeks and just found out a couple of days ago I have vasa praevia. I was diagnosed with low lying placenta at 20 weeks, my placenta is now split in two, the larger section is anterior the other part low lying and then the blood vessels are lying along the top of my cervix. Both sections of placenta are just over 2cm away from OS but because of the vessels, baby would most likely die if I went into labour because of blood loss. I was originally booked in for a section at 37+1(9th May) but they have brought it forward to 35+5 which is the 29th April so 2 weeks earlier than expected. This is an extremely rare condition 1 in 1200 - 1 in 5000 woman have this problem. We’ve only found this out in the last couple of days so not what we were expecting but a c section was discussed early on. Just to add I’ve had absolutely no bleeding my whole pregnancy. I don’t think anything makes you more prone to happening I think it’s just one of those things.
