NIPT yes or not?

Hi,

I just got back my results from combined screening showing 1/5000 so low probability of Down Patau and Edwards syndrome. I am 40 and I am italian. All my friends in italy who had children and low probabilty on combined screening did the NIPT. In some instances they proceeded with amniocentesis and villocentesis 'just to make sure'. None of the people i know here in UK did extra exams after combined screening showing low probability and my husband says it's Italian madness going through all those redundant exams. Did you guys do NIPT? I am undecided

You could get a NIPT if you have about a grand to drop on it. I didn't bother.

Can't believe people would do an amnio if the other 2 were low risk though. Miscarriage risk from amnio I thought was 1 in 200. Why would you risk a 1:200 risk of causing a miscarriage over a 1:5000 risk of down/edward/pataus when a very reliable nipt tests says its fine.

Exactly, right? Thats also what we think. I am definitely not going to do amnio maybe NIPT but as you said it is very expensive.

Not with those odds. Definitely not.

Sunseeker83 · 27/02/2025 10:53

Not the point but it's not a grand. You can get it at the fetal medicine centre in London (a world leading facility) for £300 or £400 combined with a scan. Other places are even cheaper

TheIceBear · 27/02/2025 10:55

I did nipt with all of my pregnancies. I would prefer to have as much information as possible. Yes it’s expensive but in my opinion worth it. Especially if you are over 35.

Sunseeker83 · 27/02/2025 10:58

I had a 1:5000 Down's syndrome risk from the combined screening, and even better (1:20000) for Edward's/patau and I did get the NIPT. However, because of my age, I wanted the reassurance so I had actually done it before I had my 12 week scan and the combined screening

LolaJ87 · 27/02/2025 11:00

I did NIPT as I'm over 35 etc. I'm in Ireland and I think it was €460. They also checked for things not checked in combined testing. It was worth it to me.

Mushroo · 27/02/2025 11:00

It's about £300 and for me it was totally worth it. Complete peace of mind early on and as a bonus you find out the sex.

I wouldn't hesitate to do it again to remove the uncertainty and worry

Mulledjuice · 27/02/2025 11:03

I was 41. I did NIPT privately the same week as my NHS dating scan because it would have been too late if I'd waited for the results of my NHS combined screening before deciding whether to proceed with NIPT.

IF my result had been high risk I might have considered Amnio or CVS, but I certainly didn't think of doing that with my low risk result, because the stats for NIPT are so good and the miscarriage risk not worth it. Sounds bonkers to me.

My baby did not have any of the conditions screened for in NIPT.

It was £350 including scan, would have been less without the scan.

sel2223 · 27/02/2025 11:04

I probably wouldn't bother with the results of your combined screening test.

I'm 42 (was 41 at the time) and actually paid for a private NIPT around 10/11 weeks so I had those before the NHS combined screening. I just felt like I'd be high risk due to age anyway so did it to save a whole lot of anxiety.
