Glucose test- what to expect!?

MomToBe2025xx · 25/02/2025 09:10

So I have my glucose test this Thursday due to baby's growth.
I already hate blood tests but I just wanted to know how people found theirs if they had one?
How long is the wait for results?
If I do have GD, what will I then have to do?

It’s 6 years ago now but from memory, you have a blood test, you then drink a carton of juice which is lucozade and then wait for a bit and have another test. I think it was maybe 2 hours?
mine came back clear so no advice on what happens if it’s postitive xxx
youll be ok, just keep reminding it’s for the baby and it helps you focus on them not your own fears x

Blood test then you drink a horrible cup of glucose stuff. Then you wait two hours (bring a book in case the WiFi is crap!) and then another blood test. I was starving so bring a snack to have straight after the second blood test. I didn’t have it.

Waiting at the hospital for two hours is not going to be fun😂
I have heard awful things about these drinks, a lot is making me sick during this pregnancy so I hope this doesn't!

Mine was 7 years ago but I had to have no food after midnight and then head to the hospital around 9am. They took blood (normal blood test) and then gave me the drink. It wasn’t lucozade but a strange sugary drink. It didn’t taste awful but was a bit of a weird texture. Then wait 2 hours for another blood test. Mine was ok but I do recall they gave the results quite quickly and that was why they wanted an early appointment so they could get them back that day. Take a book!

MaltipooMama · 25/02/2025 09:40

Oh god I remember being in mine for HOURS! I took my laptop to get on with some work in the meantime. You get there and drink the little carton thing as others have said and then you're not allowed to leave the immediate vicinity for a couple of hours in case you respond negatively to it, the waiting room I was in was packed so even after the time had passed I had to wait ages because there were so many other people to be seen to as well. I remember with mine after I did it the first time they weren't sure about the results so I had to go through the whole process again 😭

You’ll be fine x I had hyperemesis with my last pregnancy and was sick 6 to 10 times a day even through the night. It did make me feel queasy but everything made me feel queezy! It’s like most things with pregnancy you just have to get on with it. I took my iPad and my headphones and just watched a movie two hours of sitting doing nothing sounded pretty good to me!

I've had more than one of these tests. Agree you should bring something to keep you entertained and a snack for afterwards is a good idea. The drink isn't that bad at all - just a sweet orangey flavour. There isn't too much of it either so it is soon down you. For me the worst part is not being able to eat beforehand, but in my experience they put them first thing and you are seen quickly.

Oh yes I forgot about the no food rule!! No one had told me this ahead of time but luckily I didn't have breakfast that morning otherwise I wouldn't have been able to do it. It never informed me of this on any letters or anything which I remember being annoyed about at the time!

The worst bits were the drink and the waiting!

Others seemed unbothered by the drink and downed it quickly but I found it absolutely vile and had to sip slowly to avoid throwing up. I was gagging the whole time but I did have really bad sickness at that time so a lot of things made me do that.

Yeah a lot of things are making me heave during pregnancy, and I think the weird texture this drink is meant to be will do that!

I remember the drink made me feel so sick.

I was afterwards told I needed to do two weeks of blood sugar monitoring with finger prick test strips and given diet tips, then gave the results to the doctor and was told everything is fine, which I understood to mean that I didn't have GD so I went back to eating normally.
Recently looked at my medical records and saw I was diagnosed with GD back then! It really wasn't made clear to me. Don't know what potential risks there were from me eating normally for the rest of pregnancy but appeared to have caused no damage, thankfully.

I wasn't too bothered about the whole process. I took my music and a book and I just found a furthest corner at the waiting room. I drank the liquid pinching my nose so I didn't taste anything. I had to do the test again towards the end of my pregnancy and had my book/music again.

Pretty much the same as above for the rest I could see my results in the nhs app a few hours later worked out I was borderline for having GD but as it was a weekend had to wait to hear from midwife!

Got moved from community midwives to hospital based GD specialist midwife/ had a 2 hrs session with other GD diagnosed people about diet and got given blood testing machine and access to an app midwives could view! Only had one phone call from diabetic midwife as I was diagnosed quite late and then (due to other reasons) was induced at 37 weeks!

Diet was boring but luckily my levels were ok most of the time!

There's a super helpful Facebook group if you do need it!!

This is really helpful thank you! Random question but was the diet really strict?
Baby has given be a slight sweet tooth of an evening and the hunger is crazy😂What was it like?

@MomToBe2025xx I learned more from the Facebook group to be honest as they explain it really well about what to eat when and lots of hacks to still get tasty food! It's all a bit hazy as the week after I was diagnosed my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer so it's all a blur looking back so I can't be much help!

I'm a pretty fussy eater and was still at work with limited options but found what worked at just ate that.... chicken and cheese sandwiches and Lidl protein chocolate desserts featured a lot! And walking or other light exercise after eating to bring down levels also worked for me too!!

Did make me laugh though when we were admitted for induction the food portions were not GD friendly at all so more or less gave up but my sugars stayed within range 🤣🤷‍♀️

Best of luck with it and definitely check out the facebook group!

I've had GD twice. I got the results back fairly quickly if I remember correctly, within a few days. I was told over the phone that my results came back high, and they booked me in to see the diabetes team. I was given a glucose meter, testing strips and lancets. I had to fill out a food diary along with my blood sugar readings. I had to text 6 times a day initially (before breakfast, 2 hours after BF, before lunch, 2 hours after lunch, before tea and 2 hours after). I was very lucky that I managed to stay diet controlled throughout. I didn't tolerate carbs very well in the morning but could have some later in the day if I paired it well with lots of fat or protein and drank lots of water. Some people aren't that strict with it, but I have anxiety and was very strict with my diet. I only snacked on meat or cheese between meals. I lost a lot of weight initially but made sure I ate as much fat and protein as I could. It felt like a lifetime that I had to restrict my diet, but as soon as the baby was out, you can bet I ate everything in sight 😅

Hope it all goes well for you. The drink at the test really isn't that bad. Mine was orange flavour and was like a runny syrup consistency. I didn't mind it at all.
