eating cold meats while pregnant

I am 15 weeks pregnant and have just eaten cold empanadas (from the fridge) that contains chorizo. I wasn't even thinking about it and am worried from reading other threads about the cured meats? Sorry, first time pregnant and feeling extra emotional today

Are empanadas cooked? If the chorizo was part of the cooking process then it isn't just cured anymore, it's fully cooked. The advice pertains to purely cured meats that have never undergone the cooking process as they can contain listeria (although risk is still small) and listeria is dangerous in pregnancy.
From a general food safety standpoint its always better to thoroughly reheat food before eating to try to remove any potential bacteria, but that applies to everyone, nothing specific for pregnancy. You'll be fine OP!

I'm guessing the empanadas will have been pre-cooked so the chorizo will have been heated along with the rest of the ingredients so will be safe to eat

thank you for your lovely replies @dementedpixie and @remaininghopeful23 ! i am going to assume they were cooked when they were being made. its the snacky 4 pack m&s chicken & chorizo empanadas. you can eat them cold so i assume its been cooked at some stage since the chicken is cooked?

Ah perfect sorry I thought you meant homemade. They're fine from supermarket 😊

Don't worry OP, empanadas are always cooked as the crust would be raw otherwise !
And the filling is generally cooked prior to oven baking too.
(I live in south america so I know a thing or two about empanadas !)

The danger comes from the risk of food poisoning. Which is very unlikely to happen anyway

Maxorias · 24/02/2025 20:26

But I feel you, being pregnant is so incredibly stressful, I'm SO glad to be forever done with that ! Love the kids, hate the pregnancy. I used to worry about every single bite that came into my mouth, not to mention shampoos or déodorants with dodgy stuff in them, perfumes with essential oils, the list goes on. I won't say not to worry as I was never able to !

Are you in England? If so it’s fine, follow the NHS guidance. Different countries have different guidance depending on what’s potentially harmful in those countries, the way food is prepared etc.
