Inconclusive Scan

I was just posting to see if anyone had any positive stories. I have just been for an early pregnancy scan thinking I was 9 weeks 1 day of my LMP. When I’ve gone they said that the embryo is only 5 weeks 5days which has meant the scan is inconclusive. They have said that based off my LMP and having a regular period obviously this could either mean I’m a lot earlier than I thought and dates are wrong or the embryo hasn’t developed as it should.

I was just wondering if anyone else had been told the same and had gone on to have a baby? I have worked out that 5 weeks and 5 days ago would have been a match on when we had sex (one of a few times) but it wasn’t in my calculated ‘fertile window’ and I had a faint pregnancy test 5 days later which seems unlikely.

i don’t really know what to think and if I’m honest I’m expecting the worst as it seems neon impossible but just wondering if anyone else had any similar stories. Thank you in advance

It could go either way I'm afraid and the only way to find out is with time.

If you weren't tracking ovulation then it could well have been a random long cycle - I had my first scan when LMP said I should be 8+2 but I actually only measured 6+1. I'm now 35 weeks.

It can and does happen but, if you're normally regular, it may not be a positive outcome in your case so it's important to prepare yourself for either eventuality.

Good luck.

Do you usually track your cycle? Is it always bang on every time? Only reason I ask is that quite often as we get older our cycles change and we can have these random long/short cycles and ovulate late or early.
ovulation can be tricky to get exact and so it is very possible you may have ovulated early on this cycle especially as you had sex at the right time. After 6/7 weeks they can usually detect a heartbeat. Could you go back again and see?

Pregnancies are dated from LMP to start. But even if you know when you ovulated you need to add two weeks on because of that. So even if you had sex 5.5 weeks ago really that means you’d be dated at 7.5 weeks. You’d have needed to conceive 3.5 weeks ago to be dated at 5.5. And your positive tests dates don’t seem to match up to that. So I’m my opinion sadly it isn’t looking good. I’m very sorry. Until it’s confirmed though there is always a chance though.

I have tracked my cycle since August 24 ans since then it’s only been varying by 1 day - sometimes 26 days and sometimes 27 days. I’m 28 and otherwise in good health.

I have got an appointment to go back but it’s in 2 weeks time. So I’m just trying to understand my chances before then.

When I had took the test on 15th January it did say 1-2 weeks pregnant. Does anyone know if this means 1/ 2 weeks from conception or is this from ovulation?

I know this doesn’t look good just trying to get my head around it as felt like I was numb at the time.

Thank you everyone for your replies

1-2 weeks on a digital test is 1-2 since conception (which is pretty much the same as ovulation). So in pregnancy dating terms it is 3-4 weeks.

I was going to say what @Sqwoosh said. If it’s measuring 5+5 then it means conception/ovulation around 3+5 weeks ago (after your positive test on 15th Jan) because it counts two weeks before ovulation too.

I had something similar happen with my first pregnancy. I went for a private scan at 9+0 and was told it measured 6+2 with no heartbeat. I knew it was bad news because I took a positive test when I was 4 weeks by my dates (2 weeks after sex/ovulation), also we didn’t dtd after that.

I contacted my epu and went from there. Mine was a missed miscarriage, I still had pregnancy symptoms.

I hope you get good news but mentioning the pregnancy test and dates it might not be a positive outcome.

When a previous person mentioned tracking I think they were asking if you actively tested for ovulation. Ovulation tests and/or bbt. Tracking with an app alone and length of cycle until next period is not a guarantee even if you are consistent, one month you can ovulate late. With all this said the positive pregnancy test sets some limit on the unknown. I started tracking my cycles and wanting to know when I ovulated after my miscarriage so I knew if it happened again I could be certain rather than estimating based on sex and pregnancy test.
