Thrush treatment

Although not having any symptoms my doctor said I have thrush and prescribed me a clotrimazole pessary to use. It was sore & uncomfortable and I ended up not being successful in using it.
Is there a cream we can use during pregnancy that I can ask for?

You can get canasten external cream to use (my GP usually prescribes me both the pesseries and the cream) but without treating the internal infection it won't do much. I've had thrush on and off through my whole pregnancy and had to use the pesseries a good few times!

Thanks, I'll maybe ask about it, or if there is a longer dose of smaller pessaries. The one I was given was a one off and was quite big ☹️

You can also get a stronger cream for internal use which is quite soothing. Think it's 20% rather than 1 or 2%

@Beccaa123 I’ve just taken a 7 day course of pessaries as one off treatment wasn’t working so you could try that. I’m not sure if your problem was different but I found I’ve only been able to use them comfortably if I’ve put lube on the pessaries before using (sorry if tmi but made such a difference!)

Ah ok, that's good advice, are the ones over 7 days smaller than the one off?

@Beccaa123 try the canesten internal cream. It is a complete treatment like the pessary. It is inserted into the vagina with an applicator and is very soothing.

The other option is the soft gel pessary. Canesten again. It is tear drop shaped and melts into the vagina rather than breaking into horrible while bits.

The internal cream and soft gel pessary were my go to treatments in pregnancy and are both over the counter x

Hey @Beccaa123 could I ask what tests, if any, did they do to confirm you have thrush? I am getting yellow discharge but no other symptoms and not sure if I need to push to get tested at some point

I suffered with thrush so badly throughout my last pregnancy - had so many pessaries - so I think my flora down there was out of balance or something. The cream alone won't do much so best to use the pessary. Try lube on the applicator.

Hello, I've been prescribed 7 nights of clotrimazole pessaries (500mg). I've taken Canesten pessaries in the past (before being pregnant) and they were a one-time thing so was just a bit surprised to be advised to use several. When I looked it up on the NHS website it said:

The pessary dose to treat thrush is:

  • 100mg – use 1 pessary every night for 6 nights in a row or 2 pessaries for 3 nights in a row.
  • 200mg – use 1 pessary (or 2 100mg pessaries) every night for 3 nights in a row
  • 500mg – use 1 pessary for 1 night only

Has anyone else been prescribed the highest dose for multiple nights?
Thanks,
