Rant - baby aspirin

Mostly just a rant as I'm annoyed

I'm prescribed 150mg per day of aspirin to help prevent pre eclampsia (I already have early mild pre eclampsia). I unfortunately ran out today I think I've just misplaced my prescription but as it's over the counter I wasn't concerned and just called up the pharmacist to make sure they sold it (my pharmacy was closed). Every pharmacy have said they can't sell it me without a prescription even though it's over the counter as I'm pregnant. However what confuses me is if I wasn't showing they'd sell it me no questions asked and also they sell it on the shelves in home bargains? I just cant find it in supermarkets at the moment and everywhere else was shut.

I've luckily got some from a family member but where I understand they won't want to sell it to a pregnant person however if they were worried surely they'd end up putting it as prescription only anyway?

Its so bloody patronising, isn't it? You are about to be responsible for a whole other human but people are taking away researched choices over your own health.

I never had any bother purchasing it. Maybe I just got it off the shelf.

I suggest you get someone else to buy it for you over the counter.
Pharmacists have to stick to the rules regarding selling medication where a prescription is required or they could be struck off.
I hope you manage to get hold of some.

I had the exact same response when trying to buy some trapped wind medicine (online and medicine leaflet confirmed it was safe in pregnancy) but when I wanted to confirm 100% with pharmacist they said they wouldn't sell it to me. It's a way of covering your backside. And I can understand that - I'd do the same.

I’ve had this recently. In my last pregnancy I didn’t bother with the prescription and I just went in to buy it myself without any issues for my whole pregnancy. This time round I used my prescription but hadn’t realised I was running out so went into boots and was refused if, even though I could have picked up the 300mg tablets off the shelf 🙄. I ended up sending my husband to pick some up.

LynetteScavo · 16/02/2025 07:07

Surely you can just get them where they have a self check out?

Last time I was in the pharmacy a woman said "while I'm here, I'll pick up some antihistamines for my dog" and the pharmacist refused to sell them to her.

I've actually noticed a huge shortage in baby aspirin recently. I haven't been able to buy any in weeks (I'm not prescribed it, I've just been recommended to take it by my midwife, so I buy over the counter). I can only find 300mg and so have to cut the tablets in half. Every time I go to the supermarket or boots I look out for 150mg and it's always sold out.

Medicines are licensed for certain conditions., and aspirin isn’t licensed to be sold over the counter for pregnant women. I get where you are coming from, but they are just being responsible. .

Take 2x75mg tablets

Pharmacists can only sell medicines correctly and for the their licenced use. So whilst antihistamines are licenced for use in humans, they arent licenced to be sold by pharmacists for use in dogs. Whilst hydrocortisone cream can be sold, it can only be sold for certain age groups.....theres loads of rules like this but it's a pharmacists job, we cant do anything about it and arent trying to be awkward we are trying to do our jobs.

Its hardly that confusing just say it's for someone else or buy it elsewhere or get it on prescription.

I can't find those either! Everywhere I go only has 300mg.

Growsomeballswoman · 16/02/2025 08:54

You can just say you are buying it for someone else. My dad has it as he has had bypass surgery. They ask who and why and give me it no questions asked.
