Can having high blood pressure mean being induced early?

So I've been diagnosed with high blood pressure in pregnancy. I do have traces of protein in my urine however I don't have any other signs of preeclampsia so I haven't been diagnosed with that, just put on labetalol at 2x100mg a day. Even on those meds though, my blood pressure on Thursday when I saw my midwife was 121/98. I had a scan on Friday and it was 124/93, so it just seems that it's the second number that's high. I also feel fine within myself.

I have to go to the hospital again tomorrow to have BP checked again, as they don't have any blood pressure machines to give me to take home. The doctor on Friday said that they will decide tomorrow if they want me to go in daily or every other day to have it checked.

My question is, if I keep getting blood pressure readings around the same mark, what are the odds of needing to be induced? I'm 34+5 so I think I'm in the safe zone and baby boy would be okay if this did happen... it's more so that we've just bought a house and are living smushed downstairs until upstairs is decorated and I can start nesting! 😂

Anyone with any experience - would they maybe just up my meds? It seems the meds are lowing the first number but not the second! I will obviously ask all these questions tomorrow but just curious if anyone has experience with this :)

I had high blood pressure in my 1st pregnancy, they wouldn't induce until 39 weeks x

Thank you @MyPinkFish ☺️ I'd obviously like baby to cook until he's ready so this is reassuring as I don't have any other complications, literally just raised BP.

Should also mention baby is perfectly fine, growth scan was lush and he is right where he should be!

My SIL had high BP and spent 2 weeks in hospital before being induced at 37 weeks.

Are you still working? You should think about starting maternity leave now, or being signed off sick if you can. Rest as much as possible.

Every week your baby stays inside is a bonus at this stage!

I started to have high blood pressure at around 38 weeks, it was picked up at a routine appointment and I had to go to triage for monitoring that day. I was told to return a week later and was given labetalol, to be taken twice a day, and they took my bloods and urine. I went back a week later as advised and they booked me in for my induction then, at 40 weeks.

I had high BP and protein in my urine, they induced at 37 weeks. This was 11 years ago, though, so a lot may have changed since then!

My high bp was picked up at 30.5 weeks 140/100 and started labitalol. They checked me weekly, my bp then was about 130s/90s and switched to Nifedipine. It didn’t really do much. My blood results got worse so by 32 weeks they said I had preeclampsia and would try to get me to 37 weeks before inducing. At 34.5 they said I would be induced in the next few days. At 35+0 while waiting we both went from feeling fine to not. For me I couldn’t wee anymore, had swelling and worse blood results, I drank two pints and hardly anything came out. For DS his ctg became static and he fully stopped moving. I had a csection 30 minutes later.

DS is now a healthy almost 2yr old. I’m pregnant again, 30 weeks and no high bp so far. I’m on asprin this time.

Good luck, I just wanted to say that if you did need to have your baby anytime soon then they have a very good chance. However hopefully you can make it to full term.

Just be aware you don't necessarily need to have any of the physical signs of pre-eclampsia to have it. Guess it's only once the level of protein in your urine reaches a certain point. I guess they've also run the PLGF blood test, which has hopefully come back low risk.

Barring any further changes, I think hypertension is usually induced at 39 weeks. I had pre-eclampsia twice (zero physical symptoms) and was admitted at 36 weeks and induced at 37.

With my first I was medicated from 16 weeks because I have elevated blood pressure anyway, although outside of pregnancy it doesn’t need medicating. As long as urine and bloods kept coming back fine they were happy to wait until 40 weeks for induction, however my blood pressure shot up at 38+5 so I was induced then. I’m currently 30 weeks pregnant with my second and this time they have said I will have my C-section at 37-38 weeks. My blood pressure has been slightly worse this time round and I’ve needed my medication adjusting slightly.

100mg of labetalol twice a day is a low dose so they have a lot they can do if it needs adjusting or they can also introduce nifedipine if they need to. I would highly recommend you buy your own monitor to get a more accurate reading of what your blood pressure is really like as it can make a big difference taking it at home.

They did do that test probably about a month ago now and it come back low risk, however I'm sure they said it only kind of gives risk factor for 2 weeks. I think I'm going to push tomorrow to have them take more bloods to be safe, it's really scary that it could just be brushed off if it is preeclampsia!

I had high blood pressure towards the end of mt
pregnancy. I got monitored once a week and was given a machine to take home, record daily readings and then send to my midwife. Only once it went over 150 a they would then take me in for the night. I ended up having a planned c section at 39 weeks.
It happened again with my second baby so the c section was brought forward to 38 weeks

I have my own machine and I got wrong for using it 😅 the midwife's said that apparently the blood pressure machines they use are specially calibrated for pregnancy and you're not supposed to use your own. Which is frustrating especially if I'm gonna have to go into hospital to be checked every day!

Honestly I would keep an eye on it yourself anyway. That makes no sense to me. In both my pregnancies I’ve been told to do home monitoring and it’s with my own one. It must be one of those random things that vary my trusts. If I went in constantly for monitoring my blood pressure would be through the roof.
