Hyperemesis gravardium

Hi all, I am currently 9weeks pregnant and I have been suffering with hyperemesis gravardium (minus several vomitting) as diagnosed by the doctors. I have tried cyclizine and Xonvea. I am breaking down every day because of the way my stomach feels, the constant mouth watering that makes me heave. It goes away during eating or having a drink, as soon as that stops it's there. I am sleeping so much and waking up in puddles of drool (sorry tmi). I have been off work for two weeks and I'm struggling with being stuck in them house.

I have tried dry foods etc to help ease it, I normally train 3-4 times a week which I can no longer do due to how I'm feeling.

I had an early scan at 6w5ds all well with baby and they only saw one sac and they said no sign of twins.

I really need some help or advice I generally am I struggling mentally and physically. This is my first pregnancy and I do not know how women go through this!

Contact Pregnancy Sickness Support. They can provide medication information and a peer supporter who can support you. It's awful but it will end eventually x

BooToYouHalloween · 13/02/2025 20:27

I’m so so sorry, I’ve been through this twice. The excess saliva was the fucking pits and coupled with water aversion meant I couldn’t even swallow it. Buy some fancy muslins to spit into. Xonvea helped me but only marginally. It is shit, it is torture. I can only sympathize. Stay in bed, do whatever gives you comfort. Do you have people around you for support?

MotherofPearl · 13/02/2025 20:40

Oh my OP, you've brought it all back to me. I had this in my second and third pregnancies, and I really wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. You have my every sympathy. It is horrendous.

Good advice to contact PSS.

I was on Ondansetron in my third pregnancy and that did help quite a lot (unlike Cyclizine which I had in my second pregnancy and which was hopeless).

The excess saliva thing is awful. I couldn't swallow it because it triggered automatic vomiting, so I had a lidded plastic pot which I'm afraid I used to spit into. A low point was lying on a bench in A&E waiting to be admitted for IV rehydration and just allowing the drool to pour out of my mouth into the pot. I felt so ill that I didn't even care. Blush

I don't have a lot of tips apart from try to sleep as much as possible (tiredness definitely makes it worse). Eat and drink whatever you feel you can stomach (don't worry about healthy eating). I found the only things I could bear were extremely salty crisps, and ice cold lemon barley water in tiny sips. Jelly was also a go-to (mainly because it's not that bad on the way up compared to a lot of other food).

Oh, and you're absolutely justified in throttling anyone who mentions ginger or ginger biscuits. Grin

JungleRun21 · 13/02/2025 22:33

This was me in my first pregnancy.
At my first midwife appointment I was a mess. Id lost about 1.5stone and felt horrendous.
Midwife told me it was absolutely normal so I went with it as I knew no different.
I finally bit the bullet at 21 weeks and went to the GP who was horrified that I had let it go on so long. He put me on medication which helped a bit but didnt stop the all day sickness.
I think at full term pregnant I weighed less than before I conceived!!!
Absolutely crazy to think I was that unwell and somehow went to work with a bucket on the passenger seat of my car every day.

Im pregnant now, Ive been prescribed meds already. Im not going to let it go on for so long this time.
But i feel horiffic. Just brought back up Gaviscon FFS.
It really is the pits so I do feel massively sorry for you.
If your meds dont help, get the GP to try a different combination until you find something that suits you better
Rest where you can and dont let people tell you ginger biscuits help!

Hey OP I went through this.

My advice is go back to your doctor and try different anti sickness medications. It took me a little while to find a combination which worked. I found cyclizine useless. The best for me was ondanaetron which you can have after 10 weeks. I combined this with promethazine. It made me constipated but it was the only one which really touched the nausea whereas the others mainly helped the vomiting.

Omeprazole was also prescribed for me it helped settled my stomach as I had bad reflux symptoms with it too.

Sickness bands also helped, I expected them to be useless but they took the edge off.

I hope you find something that helps xx

MotherofPearl · 14/02/2025 17:21

Yes, I think Ondansetron + Omeprazole is the most effective combination. Though my last pregnancy was 9 years ago so maybe treatments have moved on since then.

The saliva is torcher as I'm the same I have water adversion. Docs have finally given me more than five days worth of of Xonvea and they have told me to combine them with cyclizine four times a day, they wipe me out! I'm living off dry food too. I have my husband looking after me but I don't think he understands it at all.

You poor thing! That's bloody awful up to 21 weeks, I don't know how you did it. I've actually taken time off work due to the sickness, an ectopic scare and some spotting so I'm just resting as much as I can. I am only 8 weeks so I'm praying the HG lessens soon because I don't know how I'd cope with this full term.

They have put me on a combination now Xonvea and cyclizine which is helping it to was except in the afternoon then it's the worse!

Hope you have a beautiful pregnancy and you don't get too ill. This is my first and I don't know If if want a second after feeling like this!! Xx

Omg you poor thing! Hg is absolutely horrible!! I had it 6 years ago worse experience I remember thinking if I misscarry it will be such a relief, I lived in my bed for months with a mop bucket next to me even my partner couldn't come near me because id smell him, it was like constant car sickness 24/7 lost my voice from puking so much couldn't watch TV look at my phone read a book would set off a worse headache, actually lost 2 stone in that pregnancy survived on ice cubes, I was eventually put on some anti sickness tablets that would make me sleep hours and when I woke up I'd manage a few mouthful of baked beans, I think it started to ease up around week 30 after starting on week 6. It will be a tough road but remember it won't be forever! it's fking shit but stick through it its worth it in the end

Owmyelbow · 15/02/2025 16:11

Mine are teens now but you have all my sympathy. Pregnancy sickness support was amazing. I think they had a Facebook group which really helped me keep going, especially when my work started being absolutely vile about it all.

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 16:13

All I could do was constantly eat carbs.

OnlyYellowRoses · 18/02/2025 08:11

Hi, just wanted to show a bit of solidarity with you 👋
12 weeks here and on Ondanstron twice a day plus Metaclopramide three times daily.
Still vomiting around 2 times a day, usually worse in the evenings.
It's absolutely shit and properly torture, I've had a few breakdowns because I'm so hungry but so disheartened at hating at foods and options given.
I've found anything plain or salty helps a little, bananas have also been good in the mornings.
Mine was definitely worse in week 7-9 and now has eased a little, for a while it was like having Noro!

You poor thing, I'm fortunate it is extreme nausea with minimal vomiting, currently on xonvea and cyclizine but it isnt working. I'm going to ask for the ondanstron this week. I feel like I'm going mental, the saliva and this constantly weird feeling in my stomach is awful. I don't know how you're coping. I'm 9 and half weeks and praying it goes by the second trimester. I can only eat carbs and the sickness goes as I eat but instantly returns as soon as I stop eating. I had a breakdown with the midwife, she has recommended acupuncture which I'm booked in for this week, maybe you could try it too? Sending you all my love! Xx

I didn't want to read and run as I'm going through this at the moment too. I'm just over 11 weeks and have been really unwell since around 6/7 with hospital admissions for fluids and anti sickness jabs. So sorry to hear that you are also going through it - it's so hard. I'm currently taking cyclizine and ondansetron and whilst I still don't feel great I'm not being as sick as i was before (10-20 times a day).

The most important thing is fluids, tiny sips of water - I know it's so hard but i felt terrible when I was dehydrated. Pringles are good the doc recommended this in hospital, they melt in your mouth and are easy to eat. The more you have to chew something the worse you will feel so sometimes toast isn't best option, try yoghurt and soups etc. Even if its 2 spoonfulls!

I would recommend the pregnancy sickness support website. I have chatted with them a few times via Whatsapp and they are so informative when it comes to medication and support etc. If you haven't already had your booking appointment, when you go make sure your midwife knows what is going on as they may want to keep an eye on how hydrated you are.

Lastly take it easy, I'm writing this from bed. I have been signed off and honestly feel like I'm just surviving. Take each hour as it comes.. It is mentally so tough and lonely so you also need to have the correct support.

I hope you feel better soon ❤

Hi, thank you so much for your lovely message, I've been signed off for almost a month and just feel pathetic but this sickness feeling is relentless. It goes when I get but as soon as I stop it's back.

I informed my midwife, she hasn't done much TBF. I am going to contact the doctor tomorrow if ondanstron as I'm on cycliazine and Xonvea at the moment. I even had acupuncture on Friday - hasn't worked.

I feel so depressed and out of sync, it's taking all the enjoyment of pregnancy away.

Here for you too if you ever want to private message - I don't have any one else to relate to other than this thread.

Wishing you all the luck to get better 💓
