Please help - pregnancy related, food poisoning, eaten too much! I'm stuck on what to do

I had the exact same thing on Wednesday last week, the only difference is I have eaten way more this time round than before. I have eaten really bad today in terms of unhealthy food and a lot of it!

Both times fell asleep around 10pm ish with tummy pains and heart burn, woke up with extreme tummy pains which turned into diarrhea, then a panic attack, then vomiting. I still have really bad tummy pain and I am so scared. I have no temperature/ fever so this makes me think it's not food poisoning.

Any ideas what this could be?! I am so worried there is something wrong with the baby or me, it seems far too late in the day to be pregnancy related sickness and surely I wouldn't have such an upset stomach from pregnancy sickness. I feel very confused and not sure what to do and if this is something I should get checked tomorrow x

You don't need a temperature or a fever to have food poisoning.

However yes you probably have eaten something which has disagreed with you.

So i suggest you don't choose the same items next Wednesday.

What exactly is it you have been eating on Wednesdays ?

Motherof1and2dogs · 12/02/2025 23:25

@OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon so last week was only sausage and chips and I didn't eat a lot of it because I felt a bit sick, today I had dominoes pizza for dinner and ate quite a lot of it. Terrible I know! But Wednesdays are our takeaway nights.
If it was food poisoning, would I need to go a&e, I am worried it will affect baby

It could be a panic attack? I can easily make myself ill like you describe during one

BabyFever246 · 12/02/2025 23:30

Is there any chance it is your anxiety causing you to feel sick?

You seem very fixated on having eaten "a lot" of unhealthy food.

DancingHippos · 12/02/2025 23:31

It might be acid reflux- common during pregnancy. A number of foods can cause it - fatty, greasy, dairy foods for starters.

MintTwirl · 12/02/2025 23:32

It sounds like you are just a bit sensitive to greasy food at the moment. Pregnancy can throw you off kilter. I would make sure you don’t dehydrate and get some rest.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 12/02/2025 23:35

So actually you didn't have the exact same thing two weeks running.

I wonder if it's the grease that is upsetting your tummy ? i.e. sausage and chips from a chip shop will be deep fried, and often a pizza base can be very greasy.
it's the only thing I can find in common with either meal.

Unless the pizza had some form of pork in it ? i.e. pepperoni ?
and maybe your tummy isn't enjoying that type of port product.

Coke cola upset me during pregnancy and it was my go to drink when ' out ' as I don't drink alcohol.

BabyFever246 · 12/02/2025 23:35

Just to add I was hugely sick. Lost 7/8kg in first trimester sick. One day I was out trying to walk while feeling nauseous and the smell of Chinese food hit me and I NEEDED chips and curry sauce. I'd eaten nothing but dry toast for days but then I ate 2 full portions of chips and curry sauce 🤷‍♀️.

Pregnancy does weird stuff to your body. Some days I couldn't eat anything, other days I remember sobbing while eating my craved ripple because it was going to be gone soon (at which point DH smartly handed me a second).

Unless you have gestational diabetes or midwives are concerned you need to chill out a bit. I ate a full large dominoes pizza to myself at the end when the baby dropped and I was so excited to have room for my stomach and able to breathe again 🤣

Lavender14 · 12/02/2025 23:36

Op none of what you've eaten sounds like it would be in any way harmful so it does from your post sound like you may have a disordered approach to eating.

However, pregnancy can cause heightened anxiety which could trigger those symptoms, and I had 'morning' sickness all day right through into a couple of months before I gave birth. Greasy food would have triggered it and caused bad heartburn but that is unique to the person.

Are you receiving any support from a midwife? I'd be inclined to talk very honestly with them about the panic attacks and how you're worried about what you're eating so they can support you properly it's what they're there for.

Motherof1and2dogs · 12/02/2025 23:45

@MsPug @BabyFever246 it's hard to tell if it's the anxiety that's made me bed sick. So I fell asleep and I actually woke up with awful tummy pains, I then had to run to the toilet, had really bad diarrhoea and then the panic attack started because I felt sick (I have a fear of being sick) and then was sick which was horrendous! I do have health anxiety, I am always so worried something is wrong with me or the baby when things like this happen

@DancingHippos @MintTwirl I have had a lot of greasy food today and was the same situation last week as well. Maybe I will avoid all greasy foods and stick to healthy which I am more than fine doing!

@BabyFever246 I think it's just thrown me off completely as I had sickness daily between 8-11/12 weeks, this then slowed right down and then it completely stopped. I am now 18 weeks and I was sick last week and then again just recently out of nowhere which has just worried me a bit :( I didn't have any of this with my first pregnancy!

Yes Gaviscon will help. Stop eating 3 or 4 hours before bed time. Also cut out fizzy drinks as they are acidic as unfortunately is chocolate. Once you've had baby, you should be OK.
I had to get dh to elevate our bed at the top end with some books to.
Look up acid reflux and pregnancy and foods to eat and which to avoid.

Motherof1and2dogs · 13/02/2025 00:08

@DancingHippos I will 100% be stocking up on both rennie and gaviscon. Could the acid reflux explain why the vomit was extremely acidic and burnt my throat?

It's likely that it's just stomach upset from the greasy food. Pregnancy can really affect your digestive system and you might not be able to eat like you did before you were pregnant.
You might have to adjust your takeaway night for now, maybe have it earlier in the evening or just eat less and have leftovers the day after. Or have something a bit healthier.

It's probably not food poisoning- but even if it is then no you don't need to go to A&E unless you can't keep anything down even sips of water.

Yes definitely. I'm pretty sure a change in diet will help but see your GP too. Also I'm now not sure if raising your bed while you are pregnant isa good idea- speak to a medical person about that. However it's the diet that will make a big difference.

SnakebitesandSambucas · 13/02/2025 19:27

Doesn't sound like food poisoning. But keep an eye on your gallbladder as these can be symptoms of gallstones.

Fam23 · 13/02/2025 20:00

Acid reflux has been the biggest issue for me causing sickness, could it be that that’s being triggered by the heavy foods?

BabyFever246 · 13/02/2025 22:50

Acid reflux can be awful in pregnancy. Never have it normally, could get it standing up pregnant! I couldn't eat anything tomato based such as pasta sauces on an evening unless I wanted to be up taking gaviscon half the night 😂
