Newborn straining going red

Hi
sorry not exactly a pregnancy post but
any advice please
my baby girl is 12 days old
last couple of days she is randomly straining really hard, making loud straining noises and going red in the face
she is not crying though!
she has pooed in the last 24 hours twice. It is runny and mustard colour, so seems normal, and not constipated? She is combi fed 50/50 and we use aptimel formula
Sometimes she burps after a feed well sometimes she doesn’t, so we keep her sat up for a while before putting her down.
it is very miserable when seeing her straining ☹️
HV said if she is eating and pooing then she may just grow out of it

I would want that checked out by a medical professional, HVs miss so much! Make note of when it happens, how long it lasts and if it happens around feeds/pooing/getting tired etc to see if there's any correlation, and make an appt to get her seen

Any concerns with your baby till 28 days you can call the triage of your maternity hospital. Also you have the health visitor’s number if you want another professional opinion on it. My baby is a bit of a ‘strainer’ - never poo related she’s always straining and grunting, particularly when she wakes up from a nap. Not in a worrying think she’s losing oxygen way though

Sounds alot like infant dyschezia OP - worth having a google / further read into this but if no worrying features this is what I would put my money on it being.

My daughter had this, I kept mentioning it to HV and Drs whenever I had appointments for other things. Everyone kept telling me it was normal and no need to worry, she also began grunting with it. When she turned about 4 months she passed a really hard lump and again a few weeks later, even though she would open her bowels multiple times a day, she was prescribed a laxative

I’ve seen this online. Thank you. I’ll have a further look. I’ve just fed her now, she took the whole bottle 3oz easily. Done a tiny burp and then a MASSIVE poo! Wet consistency. So happy she pooed so I know it’s not constipation. So miserable seeing her straining hard 😔

Echoing PP - my 6 month old has infant dyschezia since birth and still struggles with straining/pooing but it's always soft stool, never constipated consistency. Could be that. Awful to see them go so red and look like they're in pain. He'll do it at random times and still not have a poo sometimes until the next day. It's definitely getting better though and not as severe as when he was a newborn. If in doubt get her checked by GP or maternity hospital, always trust your instinct. Congratulations on your baby girl!

@remaininghopeful23 Thank you!! Exactly that. She strains so often but still no poo. I mean she poo’s up to 3 times a day but the straining is more. Bless her 🥲 But she doesn’t cry ever! So I know she is not in pain? I was thinking maybe a tummy ache or trapped wind but she does small burps after feeding
I have an appointment with her at the hospital next week so we will mention it then! Hopefully she grows out of it fast

Paediatrician have said it may be down to use over feeding her .. Wow I never even thought of that as a option!
