After my drama a few days ago with spotting, I now have tonsillitis!!!! REALLY BAD!!!!

Dr says not to take anything- even paracetamol, if I can do without it.

Am cooling myself with a damp flannel, drinking hot lemon and gargling with salt water but still feel like shit.

Can anybody offer some great pregnancy friendly tips and put my mind at rest that this won't harm my bean????

I got by on lemon & honey and similar things like hot tea when I had two bad colds almost back to back earlier in my pregnancy.
I think the reason why they say milk is not so good is because it increases mucus production in your nose and makes everything worse.
Sorry, not sure what to suggest, except that if you are still in agony give your doctor a call and explain that you are feeling worse, what can you take now etc.

My doctor has let me take cocodamol during my pg as I have a bad back, tried to make me stick with paracetamol for a while as there is more known about the effects whilst pg, ie none that they know of. But it just doesn't touch the pain at all.

Even cocodamol is OK in pg apparently as long as you don't take it too close to the end of the pg as it can cause depressed respiratory function in newborns - which is quite sensible really when you think that it is a combination of paracetamol and an opiate.

Being in constant pain with aback problem for over a year now, I only take painkillers when I am absolutely desperate, can't sleep etc. I would say that tonsillitis comes under that heading as well!! Just don't take ibuprofen as it is not good at all.

Hope you feel better soon.

You poor thing, I can't imagine trying to get through that without drugs.
I have read no paracetemol due to it causing liver problems, so I have avoided it.
However I was put on aspirin by my consultant in my first 21 weeks to prevent clotting (this was in response to previous miscarriages) so I can only think that aspirin is OK.

Oh no, that sounds terrible. I came down with a urine infection after 12 weeks and was given antibiotics. I now have SPD and the doctor (in a very nice way) told me I was a fool for not taking any paracetamol (and tried to give me something stronger). I've never heard the no paracetamol before 12 weeks either. Can you check with a midwife on on NHS direct website?
Other than that I suggest lying on the sofa and getting your other half/friends to pamper you....

Urgh mummy2olivia I have come down with an awful sore throat today!! DH reckons is because I spend too much time on here 'talking' Men eh??

Rang the MW and she said Paracetamol is fine to take but do not take Iberprofen(sp) or Asprin.

Hello
I really sympathise I was a regular sufferer and I still get it now even tho I have had them out

LOTs of fluids I found alernating between hot and cold drinks helped.
LOTs of sleep
Gargle with salt often with the water as hot as you can stand it.
LOTS of fruit (for vitamins)

Take care of yourself. I think (but not 100% sure) that your immune system drops slightly at beginning of pregnancy to enable bean to become established (willing to be proved wrong tho I think I read it somewhere, but I could have also dreamt it!!!)

How you gettin on sweetheart?

Ledodgy · 09/05/2008 19:13

When I had very bad tonsillitis when pregnant the dr told me to gargle woith cooled boiled water mixed with salt every half an hour.

mibbes · 09/05/2008 21:06

Oh dear lots of ill PG ladies on here - Get Well Soon xx

maxbear · 09/05/2008 21:13

I had really bad headaches in early pregnancy and took regular paracetamol. Yes It is best to avoid drugs as much as possible, but as far as drugs go, paracetamol is definately thought to be one of the safest in pregnancy. If you need something then take it, just don't take it if you don't really need it.

BeachBunni · 10/05/2008 00:00

mummy2olivia - I've had tonsillitis and eventually had to get my tonsils out. My savior was ribena with half a glass of crushed ice. Helps as it has vit-c too. At night, have it with hot water instead. Hope you feel better soon x

mummy2olivia · 10/05/2008 09:05

Hi everyone- much much better and the miracle cure is................

wait for it......................

Pineapple juice. Apparently contains an enzyme that breaks down most mouth/throat infections including thrush. gargle with it and swallow to get the vit c and completely does not harm anything let alone baby. How clever is my MOTHER IN LAW?????!!!!!!!!

After three weeks of cough and cold I have discovered that us pg ladies can take Boots' Glycerin, Honey and Lemon cough mixture (and it explicitly says this on the bottle). I think it is more soothing than curing, but seems to be doing me some good.

It?s been a couple of days now Mummy2olivia, so I hope you are feeling a bit of a relief. I haven?t taken any medication in the last 10 years except birth control. One drink I make I to boil in water (duh?on my part) dry chilli flakes and ginger. About 5 min. Pour it over a slice of lemon and add honey to taste. Echinacea tea is a fab way of combating against getting colds. Three cups a week. I haven?t yet read anything that it is not for you when pregnant. And make your own ice lollies (or rather get DH/DP) with organic orange and grapefruit juice. Better than just water and food colourings/flavourings. Then you get lots of VitC in a fun way. Stay away from dairy and wheat? they create mucus which becomes a breeding ground for the infection.

Get better soon.
