Hyperemesis in 1st pregnant not in 2nd?

I'm currently 9 weeks pregnant with DC2.

DD is 2 in May and I was sick from 4 weeks until I gave birth, multiple times a day, lived on green apples and water, sometimes had to be admitted to hosp for fluids if I couldn't keep water down and she was small at 5lb 15oz.

I've had waves of nausea this time around, been sick twice but woke up a few days ago feeling normal other than I'm so tired, all the time.

It worried me so much I had a reassurance scan today, baby measuring on track with heartbeat and saw the little arm and leg buds starting to form.

I hated hyperemesis but after multiple miscarriages, it was actually a relief for the first 12 weeks to have sickness as I took this as a reassuring sign that my hormones were doing what they needed to (silly I know as lots of people don't experience any sickness or even symptoms and have healthy pregnancies and babies).

I'm really struggling with feeling "normal" and worrying constantly I'm going to lose this one, I would never wish for hyperemesis again, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy! I just wish I had more symptoms other than tiredness.

I was told I was more likely to have it again as I'd had it once. I'm wondering if this could be a boy? (Not that I'm fussed either way, we are just so grateful and this will be our last baby regardless). Or whether other people have had 2 of the same sex and hyperemesis in one and not the other.

Our bodies are amazing, and confusing and sometimes bloody horrible (hyperemesis I'm looking at you).

Did this happen to any of you?

It absolutely varies person to person. I was totally sure my second was a boy because my sickness levels were identical to my first pregnancy. Baby was a girl.

KatyN · 10/02/2025 19:27

I was fine with my first. Signed off work from 5 weeks with my second as I was sick everytime I moved.

Both pregnancies were completely different. I do have a boy and a girl.

AspieMumma · 10/02/2025 20:10

I had it way worse with my second. They were both boys just different pregnancies

iggleoggle · 10/02/2025 20:15

I Didn’t have hyperemesis but my sickness was vastly different between pregnancies. First pregnancy I was sick most nights between 14-34 weeks. Second pregnancy I was mostly nauseous only until about 13 weeks. Third pregnancy i randomly vomited every few days until 22 weeks, when I had a sickness bug, vomited unexpectedly in spectacular fashion, and was never ill again.

Hope you have a happy and healthy pregnancy xxx

I would say you're having a boy

user2848502016 · 10/02/2025 20:24

It does vary, I was less sick overall with my second, but it lasted longer.

My friend was sick as a dog all the way through with her second but not much at all with the first

Maybe you're having a boy this time? They say it's meant to be better with boys

allfurcoatnoknickers · 10/02/2025 20:26

I have a boy and a girl and had HG with both. Was sick every day with DS, but only for a mere 24 weeks with DD but those 24 weeks were so much worse. Then from week 24 on I felt fine, other than being tired.

DD was borderline IUGR though which meant that I had to have tons of extra monitoring because they were so worried about her size.

AnotherVice · 10/02/2025 20:48

I had HG with my first, admitted for fluids etc....but second was just bad but normal morning sickness for about 20 weeks.

PotaytoPotahhto · 10/02/2025 20:50

Yep my first pregnancy was absolutely terrible, throwing up till the end. My second, I had waves of intense nausea but rarely threw up. Both successful pregnancies and no complications.

Boys both times just to keep at bay those nonsense theories about boys / girls making you throw up more.

Rose889 · 10/02/2025 21:18

Very different sickness levels in two pregnancies (which were v close together) but two girls. If I didn't find out the sex, I'd be convinced it's a boy this time.

Rose889 · 10/02/2025 21:19

Let us know when you find out, btw! All the best!

Aak · 10/02/2025 21:23

Very much similar OP. Currently 8+ weeks with my second. First was horrific also hospitalised for fluids, this time very heavy nausea but no vomiting so far. My HG only lasted first trimester in my first pregnancy so hoping this one goes similar. It made me very reluctant to have a second.

intrepidgiraffe · 10/02/2025 21:32

Had it with first and not with second, both healthy babies born just after term 💛

eacapade1982 · 10/02/2025 21:43

HG with both, both times from 6 weeks to 24 weeks. Very similar pregnancies but I was medicated in the second from about 12 weeks and after that I could function in my daily life.

soundsys · 10/02/2025 21:56

Ha I was coming to say "maybe it's a boy!"

Entirely unscientific but I had HG with both my daughters and not my son (who was in between!)

elm26 · 11/02/2025 05:30

So interesting thank you for all of your replies.

If everything is well, we won't be finding out the sex until birth so hopefully little one stays put and my lack of symptoms is just one of those things!
