Shortness of breath at 25 weeks?

Yesterday I noticed that, after walking just a little way, I couldn’t catch my breath and struggled to talk. I just put it down to the pregnancy, but it carried on through the evening and the best way to describe it is, no matter what position I’m in, I just can’t seem to get enough air. I woke up in the night and shot up gasping for air. I don’t feel like I’m breathing harder or faster most of the time, just this weird feeling of being a bit oxygen deprived.

I was going to contact the GP surgery today, but I have no other symptoms. So I’m a first time mum just wondering if it’s just one of those pregnancy things? Does my baby just have his foot on my lung or something? Who knows!

Has anyone else experienced this?

I think you should call 111 now. You will need to be checked over as soon as possible and they will get you on the swiftest pathway.

It's essential that a potential pulmonary embolism is ruled out.

I had this and had to be checked for PE. It turned out to be low iron levels.

Thank you, I did the online 111 who said to contact my GP. I’ll give 111 a call and see if they suggest any different!

Like PP said, definitely get checked in case of PE. But bear in mind that anaemia can also present like this. And also, even more benignly, dehydration. So no need to panic.

I got a bit breathless as I got larger, and that seems to happen to most people, but it always needs to be checked out. The most likely reason by far is that you need more iron but because of the small risk of a clot in your lung you need to be seen today to have it ruled out.

Chances are it's anaemia, but definitely get checked out!

Thanks everyone! My GP sent me straight to hospital yesterday to rule out a clot. I had ECG, bloods, chest x-ray and it’s not a clot. I’m struggling to catch my breath when talking/walking but my oxygen sats were at 100%, so they just said it’s unexplained. It’s really scary and concerning though when I can’t get my words out! I have a blood test this morning for anemia.

Could be low b12

sel2223 · 08/02/2025 11:01
