Pregnant, 45, hypothyroidism - what to do?

Has anyone had a successful pregnancy in their mid 40s and is on a high dosage of levothyroxine for hypothyroidism, and also has severely high thyroid peroxidase antibodies?
I have wanted a second child for so many years and had come to terms that it wasn't going to happen (- my child is 7 years old now) - and today, by some miracle, I find myself pregnant (and scared.) What to do? I feel that I am too old and too high risk.

Hi @Daisydukes8 I don’t know what the antibodies are, sorry, but I am pregnant and have hypothyroidism. I would let your dr know asap. I got very worried at about 5 weeks as my dr wasn’t taking it seriously, so bugged them until they gave me a blood test and increased my dosage myself by about 25% while I waited for the results. Turned out I was right, my t4 levels were rapidly going up, and dr finally started listening.

I would let your dr know and request bloods as soon as you can, best of luck.

I was on 175mcg levothyroxine which I upped to 200 following positive pregnancy test, you also need to get your tft bloods tested straight away at GP. Also a good prenatal multi vitamin with 200ug of selenium in is a good shout as many of the vitamins in these are also good for thyroid and antibodies, I currently take proceive, it’s pricy but I’d rather pay more and know I’m getting the right vitamins for both pregnancy and thyroid.

You need a blood test every 4 weeks (41, Hypothyroidism, antibodies through the roof). I got fobbed off by GP and midwives so did it privately. If you monitor your levels and ensure that you’re always on the right dose of levothyroxine then it shouldn’t cause any problems. I’d not raise the dose without doing a blood test first, my levels didn’t raise until 7 months pregnant and if I had raised my dose I’d have been hyper which would have been just as bad. Good luck!

No advice but bumping so more people can see it. Sending lots of positivity your way 💞

Thank you ladies, I really appreciate all your advice. Luckily, I have a supportive GP who has told me to check bloods every 4 weeks. She messaged me today to say to increase levo by 50mcg daily and is consulting an endocrinologist. Thank you @Notsure31 I will look up Proceive now. @Cinai2 - it sounds as if you had a successful pregnancy. Glad that you put your foot down for support @Triselly. Thank you @Randomusername37258

Yes I agree with @Cinai2 I forgot to say I also got fobbed off by the GP, they literally don’t know what they are doing when managing pregnant women with thyroid disorders so you have to be persistent with them.
