Weight staying same for 2 weeks now - 29 weeks pregnant

Hi ,
I am currently 29 weeks pregnant and have had a steady weight gain since the beginning of pregnancy from 64kgs to now around 71.5 kgs. My BMI was normal to start with. For the last two weeks though, I haven't seen this number move at all so getting a bit concerned...
I did have a midwife appointment who said my fundal height has moved from 27 to 30cm but also said they generally take +/-3cms for measurement error. She said its fine and not to worry.
additionally last week i got tagged for gestational diabetes so i have been making some diet changes but still eating enough i think. I can feel the baby movements but it's still not settled into a regular pattern so I can't confidently say if it's slowed down or not. My next scan is not until 8th feb so am really panicking ... Should I ask the day assessment unit to check for growth before that? I doubt they will do that .. I think at best they would probably check for heart rate and send us back...anyone else in the same boat?

  • The one thing I have had to change due to gestational diabetes is cut down my midnight snacking as I need to do fasting sugars test every morning but apart from that I feel if anything am eating more consciously and healthy

If your midwife isn't worried and you can feel baby move then it's likely everything is ok.
You don't need to keep weighing yourself.

My weight stayed the same for most of the third trimester, and my baby was over 10lbs. As long as they're moving, weight is little cause for concern I think. The app Count the Kicks was great to help me identify a pattern too - I used it every day at the same time.

this happened to me too around that time, you will start putting it on again soon.

Greymalkin12 · 01/02/2025 11:09

I've found that with gestational diabetes diet changes you do slow down with weight gain, however it shouldn't be too much of an issue - the baby will take what they need! I was at 63.5kg at my booking appointment and 65kg now at 36 weeks however baby seems to be growing ok.

As PP has already said if your midwife isn't concerned nor should you. I put on less than 1stone for each of my pregnancies starting in the middle of my BMI with no sickness etc. I didn't look pregnant just lost my waist. My babies were 7lb 5 & 7lb 8. Everyone is different.

Hi OP, you have absolutely nothing to be concerned about.

Firstly, you have gained 7kg which is, honestly, more than enough for a pregnancy. You really don’t ‘need’ to gain weight in a pregnancy & many women don’t realise that maternal obesity is a risk factor for restricted fetal growth. I am not suggesting at all that you have obesity BTW - I just know that at my weight (69kg) I am in the overweight category! You said your weight was normal for re pregnancy so you honestly don’t need to worry. Fetuses are parasitic in nature and will take everything they need.

Second, fetal growth scans (which you should be on a pathway for due to GDM) should only be done every 2-3 weeks. Otherwise they are not accurate. It also depends what growth protocol your hospital uses. Too many scans are not helpful and can cause more problems than they solve.

It sounds like you are doing everything right.

I actually started losing weight at the start of my 3rd trimester. The nausea and vomiting had returned and I was struggling to eat. I had to find time to eat something extra. I found I could manage an extra round of toast mid afternoon on top of my normal diet and went back on antiemetics and the combination of the two meant I maintained and then started gaining again.
I got my midwife to weigh me a few times just to have that oversight. My bump was only small with my fundal measurements on the 10th percentile. Baby was born at 38 weeks at 6lb13 which I was told was a good weight for that gestation and given I'm 5ft2 and slim build.
I would keep an eye on it for another week or two and if still the same try and add a small snack.

It's only recommended to check your weight once per trimester (unless nutritional concerns) so I wouldn't get too concerned with frequent checking. We all fluctuate throughout the day, every day. How much fluid you're carrying, whether you've been to the loo, what you've eaten.. all of these things come into it. Try not to worry, sounds like you're steadily on track and fundus measuring well is the important thing.
Anecdotally - I only gained 6kg in a 41 week pregnancy and 3.4kg of that was a healthy baby, so I reckon if I'd checked all the time there'd be weeks where I hadn't gained.

I'm sure everything is fine. I too have gestational diabetes and have put on 1stone (max) and I'm 34 weeks. It was the same in my last pregnancy too and everything was fine. I think with the diet changes it does help! I was slimmer postpartum last time than before I conceived. Until I started eating all the sugary treats again!

MissEloiseBridgerton · 01/02/2025 20:50

I put on about 5kg my entire pregnancy. Once my babies were born, I was the lightest I'd ever been! I was overweight l, and think my body used my fat to nourish my babies. It's fine, as long as your measurements for bump and scan are following their line!

Bababear987 · 01/02/2025 21:24

I dont understand why you're worried you arent putting on weight? That's totally normal
Have you been told to weight yourself

Hopelessmumma · 02/02/2025 13:32

Thanks everyone for your responses... really reassuring to hear similar experience ...it will help keep my anxiety down until next week's scan ... I am so grateful to have this community of women who are so helpful when you are going through a very challenging experience of your life 😬 I guess I have generally checked my weight every morning even before pregnancy as there is a weighing scale right outside our bathroom 😄 so it's become more of a habit but I don't think too much of that number as long as its generally consistent... with the pregnancy, I was quite surprised to see it going up consistently for the last 5-6 months and hence got a bit worried when it stopped moving
@user757675 thanks for the suggestion i have installed count the kicks today... will try it out as i haven't figured a consistent pattern to her movements yet although we are nearing 30 weeks which also adds to my stress at times if i don't seem to see her being active 😬 oh gosh! I don't know how I will manage this whole pregnancy being such a scared goat 🤦‍♂️
Thanks again to all ❤️

Dont do count the kicks if you’re anxious!
