I need some advice.
At my booking in appointment my midwife made a comment about taking Asprin but I’m now 13 weeks and nothing has been sorted I am not seeing my midwife until my 16week appointment and I have been told I need to start taking it from 12 weeks. I don’t want to just buy some because you need to get the dosage just right. My midwife did say that my DR probably won’t prescribe either.
can anyone help

Who has advised you to take aspirin?

I was prescribed 75mg when pregnant with DC. I just brought it over the counter because it cost penny's rather than a prescription charge.

The thing is I’ve not been prescribed anything just told about it and I’ve been told that the dosage is important so would rather a doctor or midwife prescribe than me just buy it.

I take aspirin for low papp-a. I was informed of this by letter following the bloods they take for screening downs etc. I know some women are prescribed aspirin for other reasons.

The prescription comes from my GP. Perhaps ring the GP tomorrow if you're unsure/ not getting answers from your midwife ? Prescriptions are free in pregnancy (and can be backdated/ claimed back if you don't have an exemption certificate yet).

My midwife told me to take 150mg of Aspirin from 12 weeks. I wasn't given a prescription, it was just a verbal discussion which she wrote up in my notes. I buy it over the counter as it's cheap.

The generic NHS guidelines say to take 75mg to 150mg daily in pregnancy if it's been recommended to you. Did your midwife not specify a dosage when she gave you this advice?

Have you had your 12w scan yet? I was told the dose and given all the information by the dr that signed off the 12w scan report. They wrote the dose on my scan report which was attached to my notes. I was advised to take due to high pressure in one of the uterine arteries. (Incidentally, second pregnancy I was not told to take asprin and I did in fact develop preeclampsia).

CrispAppleStrudels · 30/01/2025 21:36

Oh and when you do get your dose sorted, apparently it's more effective if you take it before bed.

WildeWalker · 31/01/2025 06:35

I was also told at 16 weeks to take Aspirin due to low Pap-A, I’m now 38 weeks and advised to stop at 36. There is no prescription, just over the counter for 150mg.

kirstysmbc · 31/01/2025 06:42

My midwife sent a note to my GP and I get it on a repeat prescription from them. I tried to buy over the counter once when I forgot to get the prescription filled and my pharmacy wouldn't sell it to me without a prescription as I was pregnant 🤷 Can you contact your GP if your pharmacy won't sell it to you!

cheezmonster · 31/01/2025 07:04

OP if I were you I would just buy some and start taking 75mg (which is the lowest dose, so it will be at least that amount) and then check in with the midwife.

You can buy aspirin everywhere so that's daft that they wouldn't sell it to you. Anyone can just pick it up on the shelf in Tesco and they wouldn't have a clue/ care whether you were pregnant or not.

You don't need it prescribed, you can buy it for pennies and just ask them about the dose.

It's a waste of money for the NHS to prescribe things like aspirin unless you're on an extremely low income. They won't routinely prescribe it, they will just tell you to buy it.

It costs the NHS over £15 each time to give you aspirin on prescription - it's a complete waste when you can buy it for 40p.

Wishing4Snow · 31/01/2025 07:58

I’m also on aspirin and was told to take 75mg from 12 weeks. I have no prescription, was just told by my midwife to take it. A packet cost less than £1 in any supermarket.

Edited

Some pharmacists have a stick up their ass and refuse to sell aspirin without a prescription if they see you're pregnant. For some reason it hasn't got through to some that the advice for years has been to take aspirin if you have any risk factors for pre-eclampsia. I was also refused more than once. I just got my husband to buy it in the end.

OP, do you have any risk factors for pre-eclampsia? High BMI? Over 35? Family history? Low PAPP-A? You don't need a prescription for aspirin as it's so cheap to buy. Though be warned of over zealous gatekeeping pharmacists. All you need is the dosage, and I would ask GP or midwife if it's 75mg or 150mg.

cheezmonster · 31/01/2025 20:47

@Dyra Just seems daft for any pharmacist to refuse given its availability. You can just walk into any supermarket and buy it, or even buy it on Amazon, or as you say, get someone to buy it for you.

It is extremely easy to get hold of, pregnant or not, so it just doesn't make any sense for them to try and prevent it. (I don't disbelieve you, just baffled!)

hi,
was wondering if anyone was able to tell the sex of the baby by my scan photo. I was told about the “nub theory” but I struggle to understand so if anyone can tell please let me know
