Movements at 19 weeks

I feel a bit silly posting this, but I think I've been able to feel baby more for about a week or two. I think I just want some reassurance that some days may be quieter than others in these early weeks?

I did post the other day because my midwife put the fear of god into me and told me I'd have to log every single movement - I haven't done that, I've just been going with the flow, and trying to make a mental note of when I think I'm feeling flutters (ie - morning/afternoon/when I go to sleep).

But yesterday I had quite a quiet day and what felt like a very fidgety baby, but I don't know if it's just that I'm noticing it more now?! Today I've had a busy day and been in my feet a lot and haven't been paying close attention. I can feel it as I type but I just want to make sure I'm not going mad?

For all I know it might pick up tonight, I definitely don't think there's a pattern yet, so I think ringing the hospital might be overkill. Instinctively, I don't think there's anything wrong, I just don't know how consistent they'd be this early on?

I think at 19 weeks its still very early and the baby is still quite small. You will probably feel more prominent kicks in a few weeks time? It can be anywhere between 16 weeks to 24 weeks so give yourself some time :)

Yes movement at 19 weeks is still sporadic, it's more after 22-24 weeks you should start paying more attention, even then it can still be sporadic.

Thanks - I tried calling my midwife earlier and she's on leave for another two weeks, tried calling the hospital just for some advice and the phone has been busy for 3 hours so there's nobody I can ask for advice 🙃

I'm 22 weeks and was worried due to change in movement, rang the advice line and was reassured that baby isn't in a pattern at this stage. If in doubt, just ring or maybe visit? Can put mind at ease x

Thanks! I still can't get through on the hospital number (which is 24/7), and really stumped. I think I got myself a bit worked up because I really thought somebody would pick up if I needed to get through. 😕 It's an hour to get to the hospital from here and was warned by midwife that if I needed the hospital then I can't just present - they need to get the okay on the phone first. I don't have anyone to ask from friends and family so this is the best place I can get advice!

I've felt some movement this evening but it's still just different to yesterday. If it's true there's no pattern and it could feel quieter one day to the next at this stage, I really feel I haven't got any choice but to keep monitoring it.

This pregnancy lark is quite stressful!!

Sorry the line was busy that's rubbish there should be someone at hand. How about 111? Yea I'm not a midwife but that's all I can pass on. Other questions I got asked were if I'm bleeding, have pain or am leaking fluid x

I think it depends how you're monitoring too as that can lead to more anxiety. I tend to just mentally note when he's busier as I know if I use one of these apps I'll just get in my head.

This is completely normal at 19 weeks, your baby is teeny and can regularly change positions and tuck themselves away.
Expect the movements to be very sporadic for a good few weeks yet then become more regular between 24 and 28 weeks.

You should start monitoring them more closely from 28 weeks and that's when to report any changes to your babies regular movements. Even saying that though, it'll never be exactly the same every day - I'm 32 weeks now and my baby still has quieter days and more lively ones. She might react to certain foods or cold drinks, I'll feel less the busier I am etc.

As long as I feel her moving regularly throughout the day and especially at the times when i know she gets the most active, I'm happy. It's not an exact amount of kicks per day or anything like that.

It's still very early on, I don't think at this stage they would ask to see you at hospital if you were worried about not feeling movement. As PP said, it's from 28 weeks that monitoring of movement is advised. If you do get through to the hospital phone line I imagine they'll likely fob you off.

Have you had your 20 week scan yet? It sounds like you're feeling very anxious, but hopefully the scan will reassure you. I'm 21 weeks and I can feel movement a little from time to time, but only if I'm really still. When I had my 20 week scan last week the baby was rolling all over the place and I couldn't feel a thing, even though I could see it happening on the screen in front of me.

OptimisticRealist2024 · 30/01/2025 21:57

Thank you! I managed to get through o hospital for advice and they said it was quiet so to come in. Maybe in a very odd position, like you all said! I wasn't super anxious, just a bit confused really and all the literature tells you to panic if reduced movements so it's a bit confusing.

Hospital midwife explained I may feel baby one day but not the next in these early stages - something my own midwife hadn't told me 🥴 Anyway, thanks everyone! (And sorry...)
