Just found out I'm pregnant (very early, around 4 weeks. Never been pregnant before, first baby) and had my first appointment with hospital on Tuesday morning. I have Type 2 Diabetes so needed to see consultant to start on Insulin and discuss next steps, however, zero confirmation of pregnancy from their end, they are just going on my say so, from home tests I did last Friday. Is this normal for them to not do their own tests to 100% confirm? TIA

Yep, completely normal in the UK.

No-one confirms your pregnancy. You were lucky to get such an early appointment, most women won't see anyone at all until their booking in appointment at 8-10 weeks. First scan in a normal pregnancy is the dating scan around 12 weeks.

Yep in the uk they believe you when you say you’ve done a home test. They check the baby at first scan

Yes it’s normal but rather senseless in my opinion.

You have your midwife / booking appointment around 8-10 weeks and a lot of miscarriages occur before the 8 week mark.. so to sit through a 2+- hour appointment without even confirming the baby is ok or not makes 0 sense to me.. but that’s just the way things are done in the UK it seems!

Yes, the home tests are so reliable.

I've thought about this too and think it might be from the 'olden days' before at home tests when you had to miss 2 consecutive periods for a doctor to confirm pregnancy.

Congrats OP! It's normal to go by your own tests and not repeat. You'll most likely have an early scan to confirm all is going well so you know to stay on your new insulin regime.
Glad you're getting the proper care and hope you have a smooth pregnancy.

As an aside for anyone not sure why it's so early for an appointment, it's of the utmost importance that anyone with pre existing diabetes is seen as soon as possible to make the necessary changes to their insulin regime. If a diabetic is not linked in from the moment a pregnancy test is positive, there is a huge chance of miscarriage. Pregnancy can also make the mother's diabetes incredibly unstable so seeing the diabetes team is so important.
