BMI 28 postive birth stories?

Hey

I'm 11 weeks and 2 days pregnant and I have a BMI of 28 this is my second child I was much thinner with my first. Midwife is not worried because they only get worried when it's 30 or above but I know this still puts me in overweight side. I am eating healthy and taking care not to gain more than needed. However I had an amazing birth with my first and I've read up being bigger means there's a higher chance of issues in pregancy and birth anyone else had a bmi of 28 and been absolutely fine??

My BMI at the start of this pregnancy was 33 and even being over 30 it's barely been mentioned.
I'm 32 weeks now and baby is fine / pregnancy going well.

I've honestly not heard of BMI 28 being an issue for birth specifically. I would personally work on flexibility and strength, so that even when you are 40 weeks you can still easily move yourself into different positions etc. This will help you in labour. Goes for everyone really!

That's not very much over the recommended. So I would say its not an issue.

I had a BMI of 32 when I got pregnant and no problems

They don’t “get worried” if your BMI is over 30 either 🙄. If your BMI is over 35 there is an increased risk yes, but it’s likely this will be monitored via growth scans and ensuring baby doesn’t get very big, with early induction offered if necessary.

The difference between 28 and 25 is a couple of big poos. Don’t worry.

I was around BMI 40 with my third - my pregnant midwife who was larger than me said the doctors overstate the risks and was looking forward to her home birth. Don't worry too much 🙂

Mine was 31 for both pregnancies and both were fine, except for hyperemesis, which you'd already know if you had. Healthy pregnancies, uneventful births, healthy babies.

Having a higher BMI or being overweight isn't in and of itself a risk factor, it just means you're more likely to develop other risk factors, such as gestational diabetes or PPH.

Your BMI does not place you in the category for being higher risk for complications. I really wouldn't worry too much.

Bankin · 29/01/2025 16:56

I mean that's only slightly in the overweight range so surely it shouldn't be an issue?

renthead · 29/01/2025 16:59

The biggest factor here is that you've had a vaginal birth before. That means you are very likely to have one again. No one is going to give a toss about a BMI of 28. You have to have a BMI of 35 before they talk about increased risks.

for me, at 5ft 8in, those 'couple of big poos' would weigh 10kg! 😂
(however, a BMI of 28 isn't going to ring massive alarm bells for anything).
