Early Pregnancy Progesterone and Aspirin

Hello,

I am very early on in pregnancy after having two early MCs, and have been prescribed progesterone in the form of Cyclogest.

I am on the first day of taking Cyclogest and have seen a lot of posts about pretty awful side effects. I’m slightly concerned about this as I have a very busy job where I’m out and about a lot. I was hoping to find out what side effects everyone else had on this and how soon did they show, and did they calm down or was it ongoing for the whole time you took them?

I also asked the clinic about aspirin and they said they wouldn’t prescribe it in my situation, but they know many women who haven’t been prescribed it and decide to take it. I’m aware this is easy to purchase and the low dose is safe to take. Does anyone have experience of taking both and do you believe this helped your pregnancy?

I’d love to hear your TTC stories, if you’re happy to share, of course. 😊

Congratulations on your pregnancy OP! And I am truly sorry for your previous losses.

I was prescribed both in pregnancy and now have a healthy DS who's a few months old. The cyclogest was for a previous loss and spotting in the new pregnancy. For me, the cyclogest was unpleasant when used vaginally. Side effects started within just a few days. I don't know how common my side effects are but can only speak from my own experience.. when the remnants of the pessary would come out it would interact quite badly with my vulva, a bit TMI but my labia and surrounding areas felt and looked burnt. It would burn and sting and nothing could really soothe it. Inside my vagina felt swollen and sore. It can also be taken rectally so I cleared it with my doc who said no problem and once I started doing it that way I honestly had no issue whatsoever. The first few times using it rectally felt a bit strange but soon got used to it. No pain or anything. I will never know for sure if it helped me to keep my pregnancy, but it sure felt good to be 'doing something' when literally everything is out of your control.

Aspirin caused no side effects for me. I wasn't on it for the previous loss but for being high risk for pre eclampsia. I didn't get pre eclampsia so I guess a success! No experience with it for any other uses though, sorry.

I hope your pregnancy goes smoothly, sending all the good vibes your way!!

Hi, I was prescribed both for my last pregnancy and had no side effects from either. I was on aspirin for previous high blood pressure in previous pregnancy but still got it again in the third trimester this time so it didn't help me really. I was given progesterone pessaries due to 3 previous miscarriages, no idea if taking it was what helped me to have a successful pregnancy but I now have a 4 week old beautiful baby girl! Wishing you all the best with your pregnancy x

Definitely recommend taking the cyclogest rectally. Much less messy and caused no irritation for me.

Same as a pp- I'm on 150mg of aspirin a day.. actually due to finish taking it in a few days at 36 weeks.

I started taking mine at 12 weeks due to risk of pre eclampsia which I haven't developed so far so must do some good. No symptoms here, I felt worse after taking pregnacare vitamins!

Hi OP

After early miscarriages I am self prescribed low dose aspirin.

My midwife (who was an awful lady and I will have a new one at my next appointment ) insisted I should stop. However I am terrified to stop as I have heard so many stories of people stopping and then losing their baby.

I am now 13 weeks and I started taking it as soon as I got my positive result. I lost my two other pregnancies at 7/8 weeks.

Ofcourse j have no idea if the aspirin has anything to do with this pregnancy sticking, however it has stuck.

CortieTat · 29/01/2025 05:33

Took both due to age. No side effects at all.

Hi, OP. I don't know about the aspirin, but I took cyclogest for a couple of rounds of IVF and I did have side effects, but then they changed me to utrogestan and it was much better.

If you do experience anything, you could ask to try utrogestan instead.

Hello and congratulations. I've been put on progesterone and will be on it until (hopefully) 36 weeks.

I've had no symptoms whatsoever!

Thank you all so much for your replies, it’s really helpful to hear other people’s stories. So sorry to hear about your losses and delighted to hear a lot of you having successful pregnancies 😊 It’s nice to hear as I’m sure you’ll also have felt the same way, it’s hard to let yourself get too excited knowing what’s happened previously. I know there’s no way of knowing whether it’s down to the progesterone/ aspirin but it definitely helps to feel like you can at least try something to get a better outcome the next time. I’m only on day 2 but no big side effects so far, though I imagine they may come or maybe I’ll be like some of you and not get any. Thanks for the advice on taking it a different way or asking for a different brand if I do struggle with them. Hope you all have minimal side effects too! X

@Kaldan I've just been on cyclogest for the past 8 weeks and no issues at all. It is a bit messy but I'd advise waking up 30 mins prior to properly getting up which gives it time to dissolve, and putting it in literally just as you're going to bed x
