Consultant led due to BMI - what to expect for first appointment?

Hi, just wondering what to expect for my first consultant appointment after my 20 week scan? My BMI is 37 therefore need to be consultant led. Any discussion around weight is quite triggering for me, it’s been difficult to manage due to my PCOS. Just wondering what experiences everyone else has had with this and whether they felt shamed at their appointment?

Never ever felt shamed. It's dealt with very sensitively (almost too much - sometimes o wished they would just say fat rather than skirting around the issue!).

You will still see the midwives, they will just double check your stats with the consultant to make sure everything is OK.

The ultrasound will have to press quite hard into your tummy to make sure they see everything. The 20 week scan is the worst as it's quite long but it's perfectly manageable.

Honestly, I don't recall my weight ever being mentioned except when risk factors were discussed for medication (I had to take clexane injections as I was both old and fat!) But again they were discussed with respect and without judgement.

It's basically a consultation aka a chat - mine was done over the phone.

If I remember it was just going over a few things from my booking in appt and scans. A discussion on if I had any preference yet about ELCS or VBAC, any recommended meds, a plan for any extra appointments or scans etc..... that kind of thing.

Not a shaming appt or a lecture etc, just a plan put in place for pregnancy management

My weight was only mentioned as a risk factor that meant I needed certain scans and medication. It was mainly how I wanted to deliver, how they were going to monitor me and other issues unrelated to weight. It was very matter of fact and professional.
