32 week scan - head circumference 99th centile

Hi - looking for advice for anyone who's been through similar. I've been having regular scans during this pregnancy - baby's head circumference was 35th centile at 20 weeks, 65th at 28 weeks and now 99th at 32 weeks. Sonographer wasn't concerned but told me to talk to my consultant about it at my next appointment (which was today). I ended up seeing one of the more junior doctors who works under my consultant who said there's a low risk it could be caused by a congenital abnormality or fluid on the brain. She said she'd speak to the consultant and call me if I needed a re-scan. Unfortunately I have past experience slipping through the cracks at this hospital with a previous pregnancy so am concerned about the follow up. What experiences have people had? Is it normal protocol to have another scan or just wait and see?! Thanks!

My experience of maternity services would say don’t ever rely on them following through and phoning if follow up is needed and believing that no phone call means no issue.

Always get confirmation either way - we’ve checked and no follow up needed, or we’ve checked and it has.

(and as someone who had a vaginal birth with a baby with a %%*% head that no one thought to mention in advance, if it stays that big take time to have a sensible conversation about birth choices).

My friends baby's head was also in 99 percentile... he was born 1 month early but was absolutely perfect. Still has a big head but no issues at all

Follow up but some babies just have big heads and it can run in the family, so if yourself or husband needs large sized hats I wouldn’t be too worried!

I had a baby with a 98th centile head. It did always measure large though 70% and then grew! They struggled to find a hat T the hospital for his head 👀 but all was well with him in terms of no abnormalities or fluid, just a big head, which I also have but as a girl it’s disguised by my long hair 🤣 so sometimes a big head can just be a big head but do follow up if you’re worried

Some babies just have a big head. My daughter had a big head and so did her daughter. They never stopped going on about it and even sent her for extra scans. Her babys head was 35cm when she was born.

My DD2 was off the scale, saw consultant who looked at my husband and me and said 'what did you expect when you two have huge heads!'
He did also check the scans for abnormalities.

To update for anyone else reading this - baby's head was 50th centile when born!

This happened me too and my baby was absolutely fine born at 39 weeks.

i was worried though

id deffo chase this - when my sonographer saw this I was immediately sent for monitoring and further testing then and there! And was booked for regular growth scans and monitoring and extra consultant appointments straight away- i wasn’t sent home.

if your hospital as precious bad admin for things like this then please keep at them
