prob your soft tissues ligaments etc stretching and softening. pay attention to your posture, don't over stretch and keep doing light excercise (walking and swimming)

Hiya Ive had this on my right hip and bum since around 18 weeks (now 32) went to see a physio at 20 weeks who advised that my tail bone curved and bent slightly to the right causing pressure on the ligaments - still sore now (shooting pain now and again but daily). Ask to see a physio who specialises in pregnancy related pains and get it checked out.

Essie3 · 07/05/2008 10:21

Had this at 25 weeks or so, and told MW who shocked me into thinking I'd be in a wheelchair with SPD. However, I started sleeping with a pillow between my legs (!), and it's eased off now. Don't overdo the exercise.

billybass · 07/05/2008 10:26

I had this too.I was told pregnancy makes your joints more supple.

Just as well it is only 9 months otherwise I might have turned into jelly. No discernable skeleton at all.

NobbyD · 07/05/2008 12:52

Hi, I had this too I think. Really painful left hip started at v early in preg. Esp hurt when had been sitting down for ages and then get up (esp bad when been in car for a while, then would get out and nearly topple over with the pain!)

Went to docs and got told it was just a pregnancy thing - joints more supple and body moving about for birth preperation.

I continued to swim and be active and has pretty much subsided now (am 29 weeks today). So hopefully yours will ease off too.

I had SPD from about 14 wks, yours doesnt sound that bad, but maybe ask to be referred to physio for a brace (a bit uncomfortable and defo FAR from sexy) but may stop things getting any worse. Sleep with pillow between your legs, keep legs together when getting out of/ into bed etc should help.
Good luck.

mylovelymonster · 07/05/2008 13:49

Could be sacro-ileac joint. I had it. Rear of pelvis, not SPD I don't think. Sit on a chair to put knickers, trousers, shoes on, don't over stretch hip - lots of other things. Will send you a really useful link when I have a mo........

mylovelymonster · 07/05/2008 13:57

sorry - can't find excellent site with advice how to improve and restricting certain movements....will look harder........

Meanwhile you can get a pelvic belt to wear for short periods to help keep everything a little more restricted and less likely to move too much or your MW can supply you with mage tubi-grip which does same thing.....

mylovelymonster · 07/05/2008 13:58

I meant mega!

mumofdjandbabies · 07/05/2008 15:11

Is soreness of the sacro-ileac joint common in preg do you know?

Hi - can't find useful site.
However - yes it is very common. I had it very early on and MW didn't believe me - said it was too early (~4months), but it is quite common, as is SPD and other issues associated with over-lax ligaments!

Best thing for you to do is tell MW to refer you to a physiotherapist NOW, one which specialises in pregnancy ideally, to give you advice on how to not let the issue get any worse and also give you some simple and safe exercises to do to help. I think you can ease it by strengthening the gluteal muscles (I.E. your bum).

My MW didn't refer me until much later when I was obviously hobbling around like a cripple - and it was near Christmas so ultimately I never got to see anyone! - was due in the New Year.

Lots of luck and hope it eases up soon x

mylovelymonster · 07/05/2008 16:03

also - what jellybelly said about the pillow between legs v. good, and never let upper knee drop in front of lower knee /touch the mattress if you're lying on your side. Hope that makes sense.

gillythekid · 07/05/2008 16:44

Get yourself to the obstetric physio, really quick referral (I waited a week) It could be nothing, it could be SPD like me and she was SO glad I went to her early as you can minimise the impact greatly and save yourself a LOT of bother in the final stages and post birth. Don't leave it!! Good luck.

HJay · 10/05/2008 22:48

I had that at 14 weeks and it developed into SPD. I went to physio who gave me a support bandage and crutches to help me walk (I have it quite badly you see) There was also a sheet of exercises to do. One of which was butt clenches (lol!) where you lay on your back and clench, hold it for a few seconds and let it go again, doing it about 10 times a day. Another was pelvic floor muscle exercises which they suggest doing in pregnancy anyway, and the last was stomach muscle exercises which is where you pull in your tummy muscles as much as you can (while sitting down) without holding your breath and hold them like that for 10 seconds, then relax and do that about 10 times a day too. It's helped me a bit so you could give them a try, it's not instant but it gets things better if you do it every day. Other than that I haven't had any other help because hands on therapy costs a lot, apparently they only do it privately around here.

Toothache · 10/05/2008 22:54

I'll echo the SPD thing. It might not be, but I had that from 18weeks with my second baby. It would be shooting pains as I walked around but it ached like a dull ache by the end of the day if I'd been walking around. Talking to a physio helped me minimise it.

lackaDAISYcal · 10/05/2008 23:00

i get sacro-iliac joint pain...feel it at the rear to the right of the small of my back (next to those dimply bits). physio gave me some deep abdominal exercises to do (basically the same as pilates core stability exercises); they really do help.

Get your GP or MW to refer you to the physio now before it gets any worse as appointments can take an age to come through.
