First trimester tiredness

7 weeks pregnant with baby number 2 and I cannot stay awake, I've never known tiredness like this.

Luckily for me my DH is a hands on Dad when not at work, Saturday I went for a nap at 12, woke up at 5pm and went back to bed when DD went to bed at 7:30 and I slept right through until she woke up at 7am this morning.

I was not this tired with DD, I was extremely sick with hyperemesis but didn't feel tired until the last few weeks of pregnancy and even then it was nothing like this.

Is this normal? I can barely keep my eyes open come midday, in the week I have to power on as DD doesn't nap and DH at work but I actually feel unwell with how tired I am!

I'm taking pregnancy vitamins with iron in, I'm not sure what else I can do to boost my energy levels. I take DD out every day so get plenty of fresh air, we eat a good diet, we go swimming once a week. Any tips or tricks?! Or do I just carry on with the super early nights and hope it passes?! Barely see DH at the minute!

Absolutely the same with our second, though there’s a 9 year gap. It lasted until around 20 weeks.

Have you had your booking apt and blood test yet? It could be low iron.

I had it in the first trimester with DS, then this time I felt tired but it didn’t get worse until 11+ weeks. By 18 weeks I was falling asleep at work, feeling way too tired, and almost passing out driving to work. Asked gp for a blood test and my iron store was low, and even haemoglobin had gone below the minimum. I have been on iron tablets for 10 weeks and feel much better. I can get through the day with DS or at work and only feel tired by 6pm rather than 1/2pm.

I never nap but fell asleep on the sofa while DH hoovered the living room right in front of me when I was about 7 weeks pregnant. Woke up a few hours later.

I too had this in my second pregnancy.

Can't ever remember suffering as much with DD1 but this time, I found the tiredness absolutely debilitating.
I was napping every day, falling asleep on the sofa which is unheard of and just generally exhausted with even the slightest bit of exertion. Luckily I was able to work from home as there's no way I could have functioned going in.

That was coupled with mad insomnia as well which obviously didn't help.

Now 31 weeks with DD2 and happy to report it did pass (only to be replaced by other horrendous symptoms).

Also just to add, my iron levels were OK but my BP was low.

It may also be worth getting your thyroid levels checked if you haven’t already?

Yes very normal, I had this with 2 out the 3 of my babies . It was especially bad the first and third trimester . Just try and rest as and when you can ☺️

annlee3817 · 26/01/2025 23:27

Had this in my first pregnancy and just wanted to sleep all the time. In my second pregnancy I was kind of looking forward to being able to fall asleep early, but the tiredness wasn't there second time

mummytrex · 26/01/2025 23:56

In my experience absolutely normal. It improved in 2nd trimester but has returned with a vengance in my 3rd trimester! Irony being I'm now too uncomfortable to sleep which exacerbates the problem!

Btowngirl · 27/01/2025 08:10

Oh my gosh I’ve been exactly the same throughout my last pregnancy (DD is 3 months now). It did continue for the whole pregnancy but not as bad as first trimester! Book yourself in to get your HB and ferratin checked and I would recommend ‘spatone’ iron supplements. Good luck. It’s so tricky when you have another to look after!

Thank you everyone.

I had my thyroid levels checked a few months ago which came back normal, my iron was a little on the low side but just told me to take vitamins, I'm taking the pregnacare max with iron in and the omega capsules. I've always had borderline or low iron due to what they think is my heavy periods/endometriosis.

DH has been making me and DD a fruit smoothie every morning, blitzing spinach in it so hopefully getting some more iron in that.

I'll just have to suck it up and rest when I can, luckily DD is a fantastic sleeper otherwise I think I'd be on the brink of a burnout right now.

Feel for you so much. Pregnancy number 2, 12 weeks, with a 2.5 year old and absolutely dead on my feet. Was hoping to be coming out the otherside by now.

Today I felt like couldn't keep my eyes open at lunch time, looked in the mirror and my eyelids were visibly red from the effort.

Hope it improves for you soon x
