Going home outfit?

What is everyone packing as a going home outfit for the baby? I'm looking at various packing lists and keep seeing people mention a going home outfit. At the moment I've packed sleep suits and vests in various sizes, but don't have anything specially designated for a going home outfit.

DS went home in a white babygrow from a multipack. Super cute. Don’t overthink it.

I think this is a social media thing! My baby is 9 months old now, she came home in a baby grow and I came home in leggings and a jumper. Freshly post-birth as long as we were both clean and dressed we were just glad to be off home!

Babygro, hat, cardigan, blanket. It’s a journey not an insta opportunity.

I packed a going home outfit. In reality I was overwhelmed and scared of hurting a wriggly newborn and left her comfy in her sleep suit. Outfits are very hard to get on tiny babies, I found!

If you are going to be photographed for Hello n leaving hospital consult your stylist.
If you are not going to be snapped by paparazzi no one cares.
Something comfortable and clean.

Bring more than one as baby might spit up or something.

Also be mindful that should for any reason you have a c section you don’t want anything rubbing or tight below bump.

Otherwise it’s a babygro. You don’t need to over think it.

Yeah this is a stupid Instagram thing. Babies don't like outfits really. Sleepsuits and vests are all you need.

Ds had a teddy bear snowsuit as it was a freezing cold February.Brown teddy material with ears 🥰 he looked like a baby bear

I'm not into social media at all and my babies have both lived in mainly hand-me-down babygros while little. But I did buy them one new, cute little outfit each for their trip home from hospital. It was quite sentimental shopping for them and I've kept those little outfits to have forever!

I agree that there is no 'need' for a going home outfit of course. But if you do go for it, aim for cute, comfy and warm/weather appropriate! Vest, leggings, top/dress, cardigan, hat.

Body suit with long sleeves and a zipped sleep auit, 2 way zip and inbuilt mittens. I had a summer baby DS2 so I used a organic cotton lightweight blanket to cover him and a thin cotton hat for his head.

I don't know if it is just me but I was absolutely exhausted after the births of both my girls and honestly I didn't give a shit what they or I was wearing when I left. And I'm not saying that to be mean. I thought I would care but I didn't so I can completely understand why you would want one. I would just get them some nice sleep suits.

First time round I had a going home outfit packed which was a cute baby grow (social media influence I think which makes us put so much pressure on ourselves and I realise how ridiculous lots of things are this time round). Anyway my DS was 3 weeks early and nothing fitted him that I'd packed! My DP had to go to Tesco and pick up a multi pack of tiny baby baby grows so he ended up home in one of them. I've bought a multi pack of zipped white babygrows from Asda this time round so no doubt baby will be home in one of those. 🥰

Esdale · 26/01/2025 16:55

Baby due late Feb/early March. I've bought a multipack of plain white vests and plain white sleepsuits (zipper fastening, integrated scratch mits) for the baby's hospital bag.

Extras for "going home" that I've packed are: plain white cotton hat (will take off in the car), hand knitted cardigan that someone gave us as a gift, and a cellular blanket to put over car seat for when walking to car.

I'm planning on just dressing them in vest and sleepsuit for a while to start with. I don't think babies really care what they're wearing, and I don't really care either as long as it's soft, warm, and easy to get on.

I took loads of plain sleepsuits and vests to the hospital when I had DD, but I also bought one "special" sleepsuit set for coming home in. It wasn't expensive, just a slightly nicer one. I was fully prepared for her to be sick and not end up wearing it! And she actually wore that outfit quite a few times, especially the hat.

And then before DS was born, I bought plain sleepsuits again, but I also took DD to the shops and she helped picked out a similar set for him. She was so proud to see him in the clothes she'd picked when we brought him home! It's a nice memory, and now I've got two little outfits in my memory box to remind me of how tiny they were.

jolies1 · 26/01/2025 17:22

Definitely a sleep suit, whether you pick a slightly prettier one or not. Babies are tiny for such a short time, they’re in outfits before you know it and you’ll want to look back at them as tiny little newborns in white sleepsuits

jolies1 · 26/01/2025 17:23

Best time for nice outfits IMO is 3/6 months - when they’re a bit bigger but before weaning starts!

WhereIsMyLight · 26/01/2025 17:36

I can’t even remember what mine came home in but I only took sleepsuits with me, although they didn’t fit so it was probably one DH picked up from Tesco. They’ll need a vest, sleepsuit, hat. For going to the car you’ll want to put a blanket over them, tightly tucked in, so you won’t even see the going home outfit (I’ve just checked the obligatory DH carrying the car seat out the hospital photo and can’t tell which Sleepsuit is under the blanket). If it’s freezing you’ll want to put them in a snow suit but take them out of it before you put them in the car seat.

What I would do is take a few sleepsuits because they will go through a lot. I wouldn’t pick anything particularly nice because they’ll probably trash that outfit while you’re waiting to be discharged. I would take a few newborn and few 1 month size, in different ziplock bags and labelled. If one size doesn’t fit, you can put them in the other one and if they are all grouped in a bag, you just put the bag you don’t need back in the hospital bag. If it is labelled the midwife and your partner can easily find them while you’re having a shower.

Rosesgrowonyou · 26/01/2025 17:39

You could buy a fancier babygro if you want some cute photos.
