Aspirin in early pregnancy

Hi all,
Just got a BFP after a MMC and surgical management last July. We found out at a private scan at 9 weeks, heartbeat had stopped at 7w+4.
I'm 39 and currently 5w+2. I've read that taking baby aspirin early on might help with blood flow and placenta formation. Especially if you're over 40 it's often prescribed. I'm 40 in October. No history of clotting disorders. That I know of. I've read conflicting information online that all women should take aspirin from BFP to it should be avoided this early. My question is, would it do harm to start taking it now, or should I wait to speak to GP? We've just moved so not competed registration with the new GP yet. What are others experiences of aspirin? I guess I'm just looking for anything to make this one stick.

Hiya i just tested positive today too, have actually just started an October 2025 babies thread if you wanted to join. I also had mmc last year in October at 10 week (baby stopped growing at 8) I've booked a drs appointment for next week to ask about aspirin and progesterone xx

I fell pregnant at 41 with a history of pre-eclampsia and was advised to take low dose aspirin for minimum 12 weeks

Hey, sorry I can't be too much help because this is my first pregnancy so not sure on everything, just thought I'd quickly say. I had my first midwife appointment last week and I've been put at a higher risk of pre eclampsia. Because of this, I've been prescribed aspirin but was told not to take it until I'm 12 weeks, though I have been told to take it throughout the pregnancy so guess it's just to reduce the pre eclampsia risk. I'd wait and talk with the GP first personally, just to be sure, or maybe if you could call the midwives for some advice? Hope all goes well!

With my second, I knew I'd be recommended to take aspirin as I'd had pre-eclampsia with my first. So I took it from BFP as I could see no harm in it. If I hadn't been, my midwife would have recommended I took it from the booking appointment until 36 weeks. Best of luck.

It’s odd how much the information varies.

My first pregnancy was a mmc, found out at the 9 week scan.

I had preeclampsia in my second pregnancy. I’m pregnant now for the third time so was prescribed asprin but was told not to take it before 12 weeks. She didn’t elaborate why. I guess because the placenta starts to take over then so the asprin is to help the blood flow for it.

In this pregnancy at 7+5 I had sharp pain and ended up at the epu. They said because I had had a bit of bleeding and due to a previous miscarriage, their research had said progesterone might help. I forgot the name of it but it goes vaginally. They said the research is supportive of it helping some people. I decided not to take it because the bleeding was a speck at 4 weeks and nothing since and they focused on bleeding being a factor. They never mentioned asprin at the epu.

Hi I had 3 miscarriages and was told by 2 different recurrent miscarriage consultants (gynaecologists) to take 150mg aspirin (i.e. 2x "baby" 75mg tablets) each day from 3 months pre-conception (and continue in the pregnancy). We made a LOT of changes, so can't say if this made a difference or not, but currently 28 weeks pregnant with our 4th attempt, first success :D It's something to do with how the placenta attaches, so taking it early is good as it allows it to form well right from the start. xx

EveningReflection · 24/01/2025 08:59

At my first appointment (around 10 weeks) I was advised to take a low dose of aspirin each day, between 75mg and 150 mg (so I take just half of a full 300mg tablet). I'm 42 and I believe this is advised for anyone over 40. Ask your midwife.

Sparklesofdust · 24/01/2025 09:44

I am on 150mg a day due to pre eclampsia in last pregnancy and hypertension, I was advised between 12-36weeks to take it 2 times a day morning and evening

Ahh congratulations! Thank you for replying and being so kind. I'm going to make a doctor's appointment next week. I was on the due in Feb 2025 thread on here previously. I'm going to wait a bit until I join another one. Although my app says I'm due end of September so maybe there's one of those. Wishing you all the best with this pregnancy xx

congrats!!
I would just double check with a health professional. I was advised to take it in my first pregnancy so started it myself early on in my second, found out at my first review the guidelines had changed and was not necessary however had also been admitted to hospital during the time with horrific gastritis caused by it! x

WildFinch · 24/01/2025 18:04

Thank you for all the kind replies. I'm going to make a doctor's appointment to ask. I don't know why my last miscarriage happened and I know they don't really investigate until you've had 3 but all the blood tests I've had have come back normal for hormones. So I'm not sure about the progesterone. Wishing everyone good baby dust!

I'm sorry to hear about your miscarriages, thank you for replying. This is what I'd read about the placenta and pregnancy making your blood sticky, aspirin can help with that. Was wondering if I can lower any risk. I'll try and speak to my doctor next week.
