I'd go and speak to your doctor first, they can prescribe anti-sickness tablets and they'll check your urine to see if you're dehydrated.

FrogsLoveRain · 22/01/2025 13:59

Doctor / chemist first.

Tbh I can't understand why your first thought was hospital.

Tooearlytothink · 22/01/2025 14:03

Drip is for a good bit further down the line when you're not managing to take on/keep down fluids. In my area midwives tend to say 48 hours not keeping anything down they'll test urine to see if you're at the point of needing a drip (not sure how this compares & not saying it's right, but just to give you an idea)

Tooearlytothink · 22/01/2025 14:04

Should also say in first pregnancy I was sick several times most days up to week 18 or so, including a few stints of 24-48 hours of not keeping fluids down and still never got to the point of hospital/a drip

A doctor will test your urine for ketones and you will be sent for rehydration via a drip if necessary.

I had severe HG both pregnancies, first time I was only hospitalised once, second time I was admitted 3 times until they agreed to put me on a strong antiemetic.

First port of call is GP to ask for help. Their concern is always about how dehydrated you are - so if you are being sick but still keeping most liquids down you should be fine. If you get dehydrated then it becomes a spiral as that can make you more sick. If you become very dehydrated you may need hospital treatment but if you can see the GP and avoid this I would!

The nhs general guidance is at https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/dehydration/

When I first went to GP he gave me a patronising talk about sickness in pregnancy and trying ginger biscuits... then reluctantly agreed to do a urine dip. Then asked if I needed an ambulance or could someone drive me to A&E....
So if you think you are dehydrated (rather than "just" being fed up with the sickness!) then seek help.

Dehydration

Dehydration is when your body loses more fluid than you take in. Find out what the symptoms of dehydration are, how to prevent it and when to get medical help.

Please contact your doctor ASAP. Medication is key here - not hospital straightaway. Check out Pregnancy Sickness Support for the guidelines on what you should be asking for. I had awful.HG this pregnancy - I was being sick 15 times a day at the beginning, and was pretty miserable until 24 weeks but medication kept it under control. A drip will get you rehydrated but it won't sort the actual problem.

remaininghopeful23 · 22/01/2025 14:52

Getting ahead of it with medicide is the best approach to start with. Are you taking in fluids? Nausea and occasionally vomiting would be more the 'normal' side of pregnancy sickness. Hospital visit would be multiple vomits, not keeping down any fluids, dehydration. That does not mean anyone has to just suffer in silence, there's really good meds out there to help you manage. Hope you get the support you need OP.

Thanks everybody. It’s just me worrying. I’ll contact my GP tomorrow. The sickness is really starting to put me down :( just need to remind myself this is totally normal x

It's awful isn't it OP, you have my full sympathy as the first trimester can be absolutely brutal!
I struggled a lot with sickness and nausea, loss of appetite etc and that led to absolute exhaustion.

If it gets too much, definitely call your GP.

HG has been mentioned but that's normally diagnosed when you're being sick upwards of 3 times a day! Thankfully mine never got as bad as that, it was once or twice a day until about 16 weeks then once a day till 20 weeks.
I'm 31 weeks now and it's about once a week.

Hoppinggreen · 22/01/2025 18:49

Speak to your GP or MW.
I threw up once or twice a day and lost 2 stones and didn't ever go to hospital.
