Just wondered if anyone has any insight about how soon they felt confident/ okay taking baby abroad?

we have a possible big family wedding when our first baby will only be 3 months old, is this unrealistic? Or do able?

thanks

We took my son at that age and it was fine! Much easier travelling with them at that age.

I took mine at 7 weeks, it was fine. He travelled loads in that first year, always a dream. He’s still great to travel with now, and he’s 3.

Make sure you apply for a passport as soon as possible. First passports can take a while and it might be a tight turnaround between registering the birth and the trip, even more so if you deliver late.

Do you mean uk to France or Australia? Although at that age they are pretty portable, especially if you are breastfeeding.

I think dd1 was 3 months when we first took her abroad

As long as you get an appointment at the register office to register the birth and manage to get the passport beforehand I think 3m is a great time for travelling.

We had our 3rd in our native country.
We combined paternity leave with husband's summer holiday so we had time for baby's christening. Travelled home to UK then baby was 5 weeks.
A 12 hours travel. No issues. Be sure of having a passport for baby.

Took twins to Spain at 9 months. Private villa and pool by the beach. It was a delight!

We went to turkey with our 7 month old for my brothers wedding. He had just reached the point of sleeping for 5-6 hrs at night so it timed well. He was an easy baby to travel with and we had a great time. Also there was family there to help us.

I think for us the slowest point was registering the baby, at the time we had to wait 5 weeks due to a backlog. Applying for a passport was quite smooth and quick and we did this at 3 months old.

I suppose I wouldn’t have enjoyed going abroad at 3 months postpartum but only because I didn’t enjoy the lack of sleep, and we bottle fed so more faff and logistics being away vs being at home with it all. By 6 months I was more confident, he had settled into a pattern/predictable times and it allowed a bit more freedom. We can only say this with hindsight though.

To be honest I would have still attempted it with a 3-6month old still, if it was any sooner than a 3 month old I would have declined to go but partly due to the pressure of the birth certificate/passport/being ready to travel/if baby came late.

Every baby is different though. My friend has twins who are sleeping well at night at only 2.5 months old already.

Lots of solo Trans Atlantic with 1st baby from when he was about 10 weeks I think.
Very easy when they're tiny, you just have to carry a lot of stuff and be organized.

Far easier traveling alone than with my husband as well!

Took DS2 to my sister's wedding in Germany when he was 10 weeks old. He was a dream. Much easier than DS1, who was just under 3 at the time!

You need to be speedy about getting an appointment to register the birth, then getting the passport application sent off swiftly - and make sure your countersignature person knows to do it quickly!

Nellyelephanty · 21/01/2025 22:11

Without Europe I think you’ll be fine, I would do it

Frenchtoastie · 22/01/2025 16:33

Thanks everyone! Feel so much better now

We moved country when our eldest was 4 months!

biscuitcat · 22/01/2025 16:39

We took our eldest to Italy when he was about 9 weeks old - I'll be honest I was absolutely dreading it (felt pressured into going to visit DH's family), but actually it was totally fine and ended up being a nice trip. With family you'll hopefully have lots of people willing to help you out too!

Haroldwilson · 22/01/2025 16:48

I'll buck the trend. DD had colic and cried through the night at that age. Wouldn't have wanted to stay in a hotel with her. We might just about have managed a trip but it wouldn't have been fun for anyone.
