Eggs from MILs chickens? Safe to eat runny??

My last pregnancy was 12 years ago and back in those old days we weren’t allowed runny eggs at all.
now I’ve seen you can eat runny eggs if they are red lion stamped.
MIL has free range (ish - they have a fence) chickens in her garden and they lay the best eggs! I’m only 5+5 so haven’t told them yet but she gave us loads of eggs yesterday and I’m wondering if I can eat them runny? I would rather not eat them at all if the yolk can’t be runny 😂🙈.
if not il pop to the shop to get some but it seems like such a waste.
i know it’s about salmonella but I don’t know enough about chickens to know if it is a low risk situation.
thanks!

the advice is against it.

however, even if they are not vaccinated against salmonella the risk is small. so your call if you want to risk it.

are the hens well kept? is the run clean, not very smelly? does she get them vet care if needed?

tbh I would make pancakes with this lot. they freeze well and are a very quick breakfast.

How are shop bought eggs different?

Mooey89 · 19/01/2025 10:10

@sillysmiles shop bought red lion stamped have been checked for salmonella and the chickens vaccinated (I think)

@bloodredfeaturewall they are very well kept, clean living area and FIL is a marine biologist who is very interested in animal health in general

i would probably make scrambled eggs or pancakes with these eggs. Buy shop bought eggs if you want runny! I love runny eggs and have ate them throughout my pregnancy I just made sure the lion was there

Tricky as I guess you'd have to ask if they've been vaccinated which might give it away..! The risk is low, as most chickens in the UK are vaccinated but not all home chickens are. I'd probably not risk it but use them for other things and get red lion ones for runny eggs xx

I can’t believe this but when I posted I literally forgot scrambled eggs existed 😂.
scrambled eggs for now until I can ask them about vaccinations without giving the game away!
thank you all
