Sickness Triggers

Hi all,

this may be a random one but has anyone else struggled with sickness whilst brushing their teeth in the first trimester? Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t my only trigger but I find brushing my teeth causes me to be violently sick every single time which is obviously not ideal 😂Unsure if this is common or I just seem to have the strangest aversions.

I’ve stopped using my electric toothbrush and moved to a manual as I found the vibrations really upset me but I’m not sure what else to do! Anyone else had anything similar? Or any ideas please 👏

I’m exactly the same, I miss brushing my teeth without heaving or being sick 😂😂😂😂

Oh & if I hear someone heaving that makes me sick can’t stomach the noise lol

I’m so glad I’m not the only one 😂it’s horrible - I build up the courage to brush them and make them clean then bam. I feel disgusting with the sick 😂

I had this too.

Yes very common just take your time and maybe wait until you've been out of bed for a little bit and eaten if nausea worse on an empty stomach

I think this is quite common. You can try not using toothpaste, or very minimal, using a small toddler toothbrush, or doing it in shorter bursts, like 20 seconds a few times a day, whatever you can manage. Or maybe some mouthwash as an additional step. Also mints that contain xylitol are good for your teeth.

This has some good info too. www.teethtalkgirl.com/topics/pregnancy/
Good luck!

I still have this into my third trimester!

I just brush my teeth as soon as I wake up (so on an empty stomach) that way it is just heaving as opposed to vomit. For some reason I can brush my teeth okay before bed.

Yes retching

I had to use kids strawberry flavoured toothpaste and toddler brush last pregnancy until around 16 weeks. Thankfully got better after that and have seen dentist since and no lasting damage!

Mine is more food aversion based but I think the teeth brushing one is very common.
Haven't you ever had a bad hangover and brushing your teeth makes you wretch or throw up? I know I have. There must be something that triggers your gag reflex

This takes me back.

When I was pregnant my triggers were...
Brushing my teeth
Coughing
Being in the car
Being too hot, which brought on coughing
and walking into the supermarket and the smell of the fruit and veg aisles.

I loved brushing my teeth when pregnant. That clean toothpaste smell was the best thing in the world.

DH cooking in the cast iron pans though... instant vomit.

Ours are very similar! I never used to get sickness in the car but the motion or any bumps on the road instantly triggers sickness. Crazy what happens to our body during pregnancy!

Out of interest, did you end up having a boy or girl when you had these symptoms? Also, did these ease at any point or were you stuck with them for all trimesters? X

I know that last reply wasn't to me but I thought I'd answer anyway - I'm on my second pregnancy and they couldn't be more different from each other in every way. Sickness, cravings, symptoms, how I'm carrying etc etc. I was convinced this one must be a boy as it was the opposite to my first but nope, both girls.
