Hospital bag question

Hi all,

33 weeks tomorrow (where has the time gone?) and starting to think about packing hospital bags for baby and I in the next few weeks.

Just wondered how many changes of clothes you pack for little one? And also which nappy size?

thanks in advance :)

So exciting! I took maybe like 4 outfits with me..just vests and baby grows, but it allowed for over night stays and extra if needed. Do you have anyone who could bring more if you needed more? I definitely took way more than I needed! Looked like I was moving in to the hospital 😅 I just took size 1 nappies I think!

I've packed 3 x newborn, 1 x up to one month, 2 x 0-3 months, and 1 x tiny baby. I've size 1 nappies, but am considering a bag of size 0 and leaving them in the car just in case.

Newborn sleepsuits and bodysuits and newborn nappies. I knew I wasn't having a big baby and the clothes were big on her for over a month. If you're expecting a 7 1/2lb or bigger baby then consider 0-3 months clothing.

I birthed an 8lb9 baby 5 weeks ago and he was in newborn for a month, until his feet got too big. I think length of baby matters more than weight.

I took 5 vests and 3 sleepsuits in newborn, 2 vests in 0-3. I was out of hospital 7 hours after he was born though so he didn't have time to go through any outfits really. With my first I was in hospital one night, and he managed to wee on a couple of outfits while I changed nappies, so I went through more with him.

I packed 3 x newborn and 3 x 0-3, plus a 'coming home outfit' for my ELCS (24 hours in hospital)
Last minute I added a tiny baby sleepsuit that a friend had given me 'just in case'.
Nappies, I packed size 1.

DD1 had been predicted to be 7.5lbs at a scan 4 days before she was born but she came out under 6lbs and very long and skinny. She needed tiny baby as the others absolutely swallowed her whole.... same with the nappies.

My mum had to rush out and get a pack of tiny baby sleepsuits and baby gros, plus a pack of size 0 nappies.

Her lovely coming home outfit didn't fit until she was over 3 months old!

Size 0-3 months would swamp a 7.5lb baby! My youngest was 8lb 4oz and wore first size (up to 7.5lb) for the first few weeks.

I had all big babies (9-10lb) and found 0-3 months fit straight away, but newborn were fine if they were the ones that said “up to 10lb”. I had a few in size newborn that were “up to 7.5lb” that were too small from the start. Size 1 nappies were fine for the first few weeks. I took some baby wipes too even though it wasn’t recommended, as those first tar pops weren’t shifting with water and cotton wool!
I’m pretty sure I took 5 vests and babygrows, and used all of them with one overnight stay - they got wee/poo/regurgitated milk on them in quick succession!
I also packed a second bag with extra clothes/pads etc for me, and extra clothes for baby, and left it at home so that my husband wouldn’t need to think what to bring me if I needed to stay longer than expected.

When was your last scan or are you due to have a 36w scan? If so, you can use that to get an idea of what size you will need. My 36w scan showed that DD1 was under 10th centile, so we were able to get size 0 nappies/ tiny baby clothes and pop a couple in the bag to at least see us through the first day or so. I got some sandwiches bags and I put in each one: nappy, vest, sleepsuit, hat. Then wrote on the front of the bag what size plus any other notes (eg. Coming home outfit). Made it easy for DH to find what I was talking about. I think i made 3 x tiny baby packages and 3 x newborn packages, plus a couple of knitted newborn cardis from my mum. DD1 was in NICU for 2 weeks so DH brought up extra clothes as needed. DD2 was in for 2 days so I think we only needed a couple of extra vests for the end of the second day.

I went off the weight on the label but thinking about it mine was 6 1/2lb and was in newborn first size for quite a while. Also depends on the brand! I thought an 8 1/2/ lb baby would be fine in 0-3 months. A little baggy at the start but not bad.

PassMeTheCookies · 17/01/2025 22:18

For DS, I took 5 vests and babygrows and on day 2, my DP had to bring more. He was a sicky baby and he also caught me out a few times with wee! With DD, she was in the same vest and sleepsuit for 24 hours.

With both of them (8lb1 and 8lb8), they fit nicely in "up to one month" from Next, or "first size" from George.

Alongside the aforementioned, an empty water spray bottle (got mine from b&m) to mist yourself/be misted with during labour! And lucozade sport/hydrating energy drink of choice and snacks! For birth partner too if you have one. Fully buttoned nighties for if you want to breastfeed. Oh and headphones, ear plugs and maybe an eye mask.

I had my DS this time last year, wow time flies.. I packed 4 new-born sleepsuits, couple scratch mittens & socks, some muslins and Size 1 new-born nappies. I remember the midwife put a knitted little hat on him.
