Worried about constant palpitations in first trimester

Hi, I'm looking for some reassurance. I'm 7+3 and have been having heart palpitations on and off since Sunday (so for 5 days now). They did come and go, often brought on by eating, but now seem to be pretty much constant. GP sent me to A&E on Tuesday, I had 2 ecgs and bloods taken, everything was normal. Dr arranged for me to have a 48hr monitor but I don't pick this up for just over a week. I miscarried in October and had palpitations in that pregnancy too, so I'm very anxious, although the hospital also did a reassurance scan on Tuesday and baby was okay. I also have 1 ds but had no palpitations during that pregnancy. I do suffer with anxiety but never had palpitations outside of my last 2 pregnancies. I'm scared about the impact on the baby and just fed up as it's so uncomfortable. It wakes me up, rest doesn't make it any better, eating makes it worse. I'm definitely not anaemic and nothing else showed on bloods so I have no idea what it is. I'd just like to hear from anyone else who has experienced this and hoping to hear it got better?

I had palpitations in both my pregnancies too, in fact it was my first symptom with my second pregnancy that made me test. If your ecg was normal I would take it as a good sign and just try and take it easy. Are you well hydrated? I was extremely sick in both my pregnancies and I thought that probably didn’t help. Sorry I don’t have anymore advice other than yes I had them a lot, I think my blood pressure was v low as well so not sure if that is related.

No don't apologise that's really reassuring to hear. I do tend to drink lots of water so don't think I'm dehydrated and BP been okay. I haven't been sick either, just have nausea. Hoping it is just something to do with pregnancy hormones. Thanks x

Ah really hope this happens for me! Is so uncomfortable and worrying. How did you manage it?

Slightly different scenario but I'm having regular, severe palpitations due to hormonal fluctuations of perimenopause. I've since learnt that it's common in pregnancy too.

Have your iron levels been tested? When I had this I had low iron x

I’m in my 3rd trimester & I’ve actually gone into triage for the same thing last week, my midwife said when pregnant the heart shifts/tilts, that this and the increased blood volume can cause palpitations.

My ecg, bp etc, came back fine, haven’t done my 24hr test yet, but they didn’t seem too concerned! It’s on and off and did have it in the first trimester as well, very likely just a combo of hormones/increased blood volume/heart working overtime..I know it can be quite scary but try not to worry! If there was anything concerning they likely would’ve picked it up by now x

Sierra26 · 17/01/2025 06:00

@f1girl25 had various blood tests, 10 sec ecg and 24hr ecg. They said everything was fine and likely just hormonal or due to increased blood volume. Ive had palpitations before, but this was happening every day and making me lightheaded for a few seconds.

They pretty much stopped straight after id had the investigations anyway. While I was getting them I just tolerated it / tried to ignore! Sorry I don’t have better advice, but fingers crossed yours stop too xx

@cherrybl0ssom5 oh really? Hopefully it is just that. It is hard not to worry though, especially when the symptoms feel bad. I ended up going back to A&E as they felt worse but everything looked okay again. Nurse told me to try to relax and keep busy! So I'm not sure if they think it's anxiety-related.

@Sierra26 that's okay, it's reassuring to hear someone else has had something similar. Thank you x
