Failed induction to C-section

If you had a failed induction and then chose to have a C-section, how quickly did you get the C-section? I'm sure answers will vary massively etc so it probably won't help me but I'm just worried I'll have days of nothing resulting in a failed induction and then they say you've gotta go home and come back for the C-section.

I had a day with them attempting the balloon induction, a day with the pessary, a day on the drip during which they broke my waters and they had to do the section fairly quickly because of that, DS born 3am day 4. I was in hosp the whole time, but I believe this isn't the norm for balloon/pessary but we were a distance from home

Secluded Induced 2 weeks early due to suspected low birth weight baby was born 6ponds 8 oz heathly. I was already in early labour at 1 cm prior to arriving at hospital. After failed foly ballon for 25 hours , then failed induction by medication further 24 hours and only getting to 7 cm dilated . A doctor came in and in between my contractions he explained that the prosses was taking too long . They could wait but I was already at my breaking point of exhaustion and the longer I was on medication the higher the risks. They offered me a emergency c section right there and then.after 10 mins with partner we decided it was safer option . 15 mins later I was in theater and 8 mins later she was born(I just watched the clock the whole time .its was like time blurred .

I don't think they'd send you home. Even if the induction fails by then they'd have broken your waters so the c section would have to happen

WickWood · 15/01/2025 23:59

I was in hospital on the Monday, had 3 gels and a balloon but nothing happened, on the Wednesday it was decided that a section was my only option. I went into labour spontaneously on the Saturday while waiting for a section, which they said could have been Sunday. I wasn't allowed home, I was told this may have been allowed but I had a heavy bleed with the balloon (very rare!) so I nended to be kept in for monitoring.

Wrongsideofpennines · 16/01/2025 00:04

Once the decision is made it pretty much happens straight away. Depending on an anaesthetist and surgeon being available. But usually once they've come to see you to tell you you need a C section then the obstetrician is available at least. So you'll probably be having contractions or already had waters broken and therefore they can't just send you home.

My husband had to tell the doctor to stop asking me to sign the consent form while I was in the throws of back to back contractions with just TENS as pain relief because he wanted to get things moving and I couldn't bloody think until they turned the bloody drip down.

I went in on the Monday morning for the induction, Tuesday evening they listed me for a CS the next day but I kept getting pushed down the list due to more urgent cases which was understandable, 9pm on the Wed they said they were pushing it to the Thursday and I asked to go home over night which they agreed, went back Thursday 7am and had it that afternoon

Dyra · 16/01/2025 09:50

Which stage of a failed induction do you mean exactly? An induction can fail right up to, and including, contracting on the oxytocin drip (if there's no further dilation).

If your waters have gone you'll stay in the hospital to wait for the C-section. Won't even be a consideration for you to leave.

If your waters haven't gone, and it's a case of there's been no change to your cervix in the early stages of induction, then it might depend on why you're having the induction in the first place. For things like pre-eclampsia or GD you'd definitely stay in, postdates or LGA baby, maybe not. Most hospitals would probably keep you in anyway, but if there's too much going on to slot you in in the near future and they need your bed, they might ask you to go home.

Starryknightcloud · 16/01/2025 09:57

Very quickly as waters had been gone a while, and baby had a couple of heart rate dips (though nothing drastic and they would have been happy for me to continue trying with the drip).
C section was a great experience.

elliejjtiny · 16/01/2025 10:30

It depends on how urgently they want baby out. C-sections come in 4 categories and with each category there is a target time to get the baby out. I was category 1 so the Dr shouted theatre now at 1:30am and baby was born at 1:53am. If the baby doesn't need to come out straight away then there is likely to be more of a wait. When I had a category 3 c-section (no attempted induction) because my waters had broken and baby was breech the Dr said I needed a c-section at about midday on Saturday and ds was born at 9:46 on Monday. Category 2 is somewhere in between (target is about 2 hours I think) and category 4 is an elective c-section that is planned in advance and you go in on the day. With a category 1 it gets done straight away, in the delivery room if theatre isn't free. Category 2's get done asap but there is time to get consent, wait for theatre to be free etc. Category 3's get done when there are no emergencies waiting and the electives usually have to wait until there is nobody else waiting, although some hospitals will have a separate theatre and team to do the electives.

They can't send you home once they've started because they have artificially interfered with your labour they can't just suddenly send you off with no monitoring. So don't worry about that😊 As others have said how quickly the section happens most likely depends on a few factors eg how far you are in the process. If you're on the labour ward with waters gone, on an oxytocin drip and not progressing you'll take priority over someone who's had gels, got no pains, nothing happening and just no further options available if that makes sense. If you've only had the early stages of induction and aren't in any discomfort you might wait overnight for example. But that would be the most really, there shouldn't be an excessive delay.
In my case my CTG was slightly abnormal when I presented pains, had my waters broken, 10 hours on oxytocin and still only 2cm so when the section was called I was in theatre in 20 minutes.

Greybeardy · 16/01/2025 11:00

it's clearly going to depend on what the reason for the induction is and how far the inductions got/ what methods have been used. If it's just that the induction hasn't worked/you've decided not to proceed, but medically everything is fine then it may be a cat 3 section, but if there are medical reasons for planning the delivery at that point/concerns have developed since starting the induction/membranes have ruptured then it may be a cat 2 section. Occasionally, where there aren't any concerns and depending on the time of day/labour ward work load when the decision is made, women prefer to go home and have a decent night's sleep/change of scenery/better food before coming back in next day for the cat 3, but (more often than not) women stay in.

Thanks for all the replies, they have reassured me somewhat.

I'm being induced at 38 weeks due to my waters partially breaking at 30 weeks (I think it was just my hind waters but it was confirmed with the test that it was definitely amniotic fluid). I've been monitored regularly since and they did say induction at 39 weeks but I requested it a week earlier because I can't cope with it anymore.

Feels good to know that I probably won't be sent home. Mentally, I can't take that. I need to come in and leave with my baby. They said they'd give it 3 days before deciding whether it's failed or not and then offer C-section.

Yes, they won't send you home. I was there for FOUR days. They did let me go home to have dinner with DS and Dh at one point though. Grin

The biggest issue in my experience is that late on day 2, there were some concerns about baby which resolved themselves. The junior doctor on duty did not want to do a middle of the night emergency c-section but recommended I get swapped to c-section the next day... and the consultant said no. I'm still a bit annoyed about that as in the end, inevitably, we did have to go the emergency c-section route in the middle of the night. I did ask them on day 3 to do a c-sectino and again on day 4 and they were resistant. In retrospect, i wish I'd pushed a lot harder.

My induction i arrived at hospital at 9pm and baby born by 5am, no complications whatsoever and was easier than my first birth as no stitches. Just to give you a positive angle to it. I was induced at 38 weeks too x

bohnerific69 · 18/01/2025 14:08

I thought I'd update the thread because baby has arrived!

So I had the pessary in at 2pm yesterday, 12 hours later I started getting strong period pains. Had a bloody show within 30 minutes of that. They checked me and I was 4-5cm dilated. Whipped round to labour ward, contractions using gas and air only (still can't believe I managed this, I was begging for an epidural 😂) and I was fully dilated by 7:04. Broke my waters and baby was out by 7:07! Feeling good but have a tear due to how fast it was. So glad he's here🥰

Congratulations! Sounds very rapid! Very happy for you there was no need for intervention.

WickWood · 18/01/2025 15:47

Amazing, congratulations!

Okdaisy · 18/01/2025 18:32

That's amazing, congrats!

C section was a great experience.

This is pretty much exactly the same as my experience with my second! All very quick and a positive experience all round.
Hope all goes well OP x
