Possible partial molar pregnancy

Hi, hoping for reassurance from someone who has had a similar experience with a positive outcome!

I had an early scan today as I had some pain and very light spotting. Baby was bang on dates with a little heart beat … but the sonographer couldn’t rule out a possible partial molar pregnancy. There is an a area of bleeding and I now have the dreaded 2 weeks for another scan to see if the baby makes it.

hoping for any positive advice! Thank you

Hi OP, I'm so sorry you're going through such a worry. How many weeks are you? I have had a partial molar pregnancy myself so know the worry. Was it just the small area of bleeding that concerned her? From my understanding that wouldn't be a sign of a molar pregnancy but more a haematoma? They usually diagnose it upon seeing a cyst filled placenta. Thinking of you during the difficult wait💐

Thank you so much for replying.

I’m 7 weeks and scan said 6wks +4 so pretty much spot on. They mentioned some cysts and and an area of possible bleeding and mentioned a possible partial molar pregnancy but couldn’t confirm anything.

they could see the fetal pole etc everything looked as it should

So now anxiously waiting hoping for a positive story!

Hi OP,

I had a partial molar pregnancy (PMP) last year. It is very hard to pick up on a scan, especially at only 7 weeks. I had a private scan at 6 weeks, which they said looked like I had a haematoma, no mention of PMP. Rescan at same private clinic at 7 weeks, I was told all looked okay. Sadly at my NHS 12 week scan I was told the baby stopped developing around 8 weeks and it looked like a partial molar pregnancy, which was later confirmed. I had monitoring through Sheffield and was discharged. I'm now pregnant again and in my third trimester, everything looks okay.

There is only one brand of NIPT blood test which screens for triploidy (where the baby has 69 chromosomes, instead of 46). As far as I understand, not all babies with triploidy are PMP, but all PMP are triploidy if that makes sense.

The test is Panorama by Natera. You can pay for it privately. Different clinics charge different prices, but the cost is between £395 to £500 from when I looked into it. I think the earliest you can have it done is 10 weeks, but it is very accurate.

Burningthroughthesky · 14/01/2025 16:22

I've just checked: Panorama test can be done from 9 weeks. Results take 5 - 7 days.

This is the manufacturer's website:
https://www.natera.com/womens-health/panorama-nipt-prenatal-screening/patients/

It might be worth looking if any local clinics offer it near you, so that if there is still doubt at your scan in two weeks, you can book the test if you'd like to.

Sending you all the best, waiting between scans for answers is horrible.

It's so tough when you don't have a solid answer. The waiting is torture. In one way, it's a good thing that the sonographer is erring on the side of caution. I had a 6/7 week scan and was told it was perfectly normal. Then no heartbeat at my 12 week scan so I went all that time thinking it was normal. I hope all is fine for you but at least they're being cautious and checking again.
Good advice from other poster about the Panorama in case its still not clear in 2 weeks time that might be something to consider.

I'm so sorry for your worry. I had a complete molar, so never had a baby there and can't say specifically about your situation but did they not check your bloods? Your Hcg levels are much higher with a molar pregnancy, whatever kind it is, so I'm surprised they didn't check. If you are feeling worried perhaps you could ask your clinic to do this?

Figtree11 · 14/01/2025 20:03

Sorry that you are in this position @Finkycat I had a partial molar last year, and like PP said it’s very hard to identify on a scan. I had a scan at 7 wks with heartbeat, and one at 12wks later where sadly it was bad news, but not once was anything about a partial molar picked up. I hope the next 2 weeks go as quick as they can so you can get some answers

Finkycat · 15/01/2025 10:25

Thank you so much everyone that has replied, they couldn’t confirm if it was a partial molar pregnancy. Just that there was cysts in the endometrium and an area of blood… it doesn’t sound very good really

Hi OP, never actually commented on here before but was in your position a few months ago so wanted to share a positive outcome for you! Apologies in advance for the length…

Private scan at 7 weeks back in the summer - areas of concern picked up on uterus wall but baby with heartbeat also seen, and measuring bang on dates. They suggested that there was a possibility it was a partial molar pregnancy.

I was immediately referred to the EPU who did bloods which came back at very high end of ‘within range’. Molar & partial molar have very high HCG levels normally.
Scanned the following day by a consultant who said similar things - areas of concern (I think it was referred to as cystic areas) that could indicate partial molar but they couldn’t be sure. He did say the only way to be certain was biopsy so either post-miscarriage or after termination, and we didn’t want to terminate.
We had repeat scans at 9 weeks and 11 weeks where the cystic areas remained but baby carried on growing on track and placenta developed normally so we were eventually cleared by the consultant as not a partial molar and discharged back to normal antenatal care. We did also have the NIPT done privately which came back as low risk across the board.

I’m now almost 34 weeks with what seems to be a very healthy little girl.

I really hope you have the same outcome!

Hi sorry I know its an old post but did you aske them to rescan you at at 12 weeks after they said there was no heartbeat.. I had a scan at 6 weeks 4 days and 7 weeka 4 days all measuring correct and heartbeat and at 9 weeks 2 days they said there was no heartbeat and its was measuring at 7 weeksn5 days. Im punishing myself for not asking for another scan as sometimes they get things wrong xx
