Hi, I have had my first child last year and have been on a waiting list for haemorrhoid and perianal skin tag removal, which is now coming up!
1- I am planning to have another child, should I wait till the second pregnancy?
2- how painful is the recovery ?
3- anyone with experience, please can you shed some light on the procedure !

Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thank you.

Hemmoroidectomy and anal skin tag removal are very different procedures.

Anal Skintags are removed as a day case. Local anaesthetic. A little uncomfortable for a few days but fine on the whole.

Hemmoroidectomy was a whole different ball game. General anaesthetic. 3 weeks off work. Very painful. (Opening bowels for the first week or two was more painful than birth…)
Id suggest waiting until after your next baby. As you really don’t want to go through this twice.

Wowzer 😱
yeah I was worried that would be the case, the doctor mentioned it was 3 procedures, EUA I think, rubber band ligation and excision diathermy.
And yes it would all be done on general anaesthesia.
Did you have it done and would you do it again ?
Thank you for commenting too.

Ah the band ligation isn’t supposed to be as painful.
(as mine were external (and internal) they couldn’t do the band ligation for the external ones)

Yes I had the Hemmoroidectomy in Jan 23.
Then Had skin tag removal Jan 24.
I still have two tags left so will get those done at some point.

It was quite horrible. But I’m glad I had it done.

This group was very helpful for me in planning the surgery (foods, pain relief etc) but beware as a lot of horror stories on there:

Thank you, I will check it out!

I will have a think about whether I want this done now or after I try for a second child. 🤞
Or even if I want to do this at all, as this has been a historic problem and I have just put up with it tbh ! Will see 😬 thank you so much for your insight.

I had a hemmerhoidectomy 11m ago it is very very painful recovery and not something I'd do if they're just a little bit bothersome.
.however my piles were really affecting my life.
I'm pregnant with my 3rd now and there is no way I could have done this pregnancy with how bad they were.

One to weigh up and I do have piles again in pregnancy and an annoying fissure (I think) from the op. I'd also rather give birth every day for a week than go through that first poo again, I'd say it's not something you want twice if you can help it but my second pregnancy the piles were brutal.

Oh gosh it sounds terrible, I did ring up the hospital yesterday to ask whether it was worth waiting till I finish my family and one lady said that in her opinion she would get it sorted now so it doesn’t get any worse through pregnancy. So that has kind of swayed me to proceed! 😬😱
Congratulations on your pregnancy !
What is a fissure ? The thing is this was a problem before my pregnancy, main problems are bleeding/cleanliness and general embarrassment!

I had them prior to my 2 other kids too - mine were manageable pre baby 1 though, annoying but manageable.
Do you ever get thrombosed ones and pain? That's why I did it, I couldn't stand for longer than 20 mins and they needed (tmi) pushing back in after every toilet visit.

A fissure is like a cut/wound that won't heal. It's not agonising but it is annoying and obviously making me worry about giving birth. Hoping after birth it's easier to heal - it's a magical time haha

Whatever you choose just know it IS as bad as people say, you'll hate your surgeon and any one that says it's a couple of weeks healing time is an absolute liar...but it has been worth it for me.

Ok I’m definitely put off again now haha maybe I should wait till second child (that’s if I can get pregnant) and see what sort of a mess it is after that !
It never causes me severe pain, occasional but very mild. And it’s the same with pushing back in although I have given up on that !
The other embarrassing component is passing wind, it’s not discreet I tell ya that !

Haha sorry I just wanted to be honest - I'm trying to decide in my head when would be best to do the op if you had an option - my kids were 4 and 2 and my hubby had a week off and took them to his mother's so I had a week in the house on my own to recover which was a God send.
So much to consider 😂
I'm not even going to mention my current wind situation so I can't promise that'll get better but that could just be pregnant life for me hahaha

Haha 😝 no I appreciate your honesty, thank you!
I really don’t know, I think the main issue is doing all this then getting pregnant and potentially having to do it again. Or am I just putting it off because I don’t actually want it done !
Would you have it done again?
Also how did you find the scarring afterwards?
Thanks again for your input, and I hope everything goes well for you in this pregnancy!

How long did it take for your skin tag surgery to fully heal please?

My wound has completely healed but I’ve got a lump (I’m assuming scar tissue) that is bigger than the skin tag that I had removed.

Did you still have a lump there for a while?

Cucy · 25/10/2025 00:05

OP definitely try the banding first before the surgery.

Apparently the surgery is awful and can give you problems.

Id personally go on the waiting list because it can take over a year and then if you get pregnant you can postpone it.
