6 weeks 2 days no fetal pole

I just went for an early scan at 6 weeks 2 days, that is going off the first day of my last menstrual period. They saw the gestational sac and yolk sac but couldn’t see a fetal pole. I have no idea when I ovulated.

I had some cramping at the start and went for an ultrasound at 5 weeks where they saw both sacs but very small yolk sac, the yolk sac had grown from then which I saw in this ultrasound today.

They have booked me in for 2 weeks time but it’s going to be the longest 2 weeks of my life.
Has anyone else experienced this? This is my first pregnancy so I’m very worried and feel like I’m going insane I just want my baby to be there all okay!

It could be that you ovulated later and therefore it’s too early. When did you get a positive pregnancy test?

Unfortunately no one here can tell you anything, only time will tell.

6+2 is very early to scan. My personal opinion is that there shouldn't be any scans before 8 weeks as it just causes so much anxiety.

You don't know when you ovulated so it could well have been late in your cycle - I have longer than average cycles and am about 10 days behind what LMP would say I was (I'm 29 weeks pregnant). If I had gone for a scan at 6+2, I'd have only really been 4 and a half weeks or so.

DS1 had no fetal pole at just over 6w.
He sits his GCSE's this summer.
DS2 had fetal pole at 6+0. Both were born on their due date. Unfortunately it really is a waiting game at this stage.

@sel2223 I'd have died if the hospital hadn't scanned my first pregnancy before 8 weeks. It was ectopic. I was in emergency surgery at 6+4. That's why my next 2 pregnancies had early scans.

Really agree with what’s written above.
i get why people have early scans but have friends who are sonographers and they have always said don’t go for a scan until 8 weeks ( unless worried about ectopic again) as often you can’t see things and causes more anxiety and stress… plus scan companies make a fortune!

Sorry, I should have clarified 'except in the case of a suspected serious medical issue'

Did they give you measurements of the gestational sac (something called MSD) and yolk sac? It will be on the report they gave you. What did they date you as per scan measurements? You can check what dating age the gestational sac measurements correspond to online, like here https://radiologykey.com/estimating-fetal-gestational-age/

Rather than focus on LMP, I would focus on the dating as per the sac's measurements. So if you sac measures 5w 5d (as an example), it's too early to see a fetal pole - and that's your true date rather than LMP. It's a good sign there is a yolk sac growing though! It's only a worry if there's no fetal pole seen when you're over 6w5d (according to the scan, not LMP) or no fetal pole when your gestational sac measures 25mm MSD. https://radiopaedia.org/articles/early-pregnancy?lang=gb

Good luck!

I'm in the exact same boat. Currently waiting the two weeks but it was told not to hold out any hope. This would be second pregnancy and second miscarriage if it is what they say it is.

What was your outcome?
