Low iron during pregnancy

I'm pregnant and been pretty low on iron throughout the pregnancy, I've now been given 200mg of tablets at 30 weeks because I'm still low on iron and if no improvements in 2 weeks may have to have an iron infusion, I'm just worried about the impact my Low iron may have had on the baby? Anyone else been in this situation before? Was your baby ok? Were you ok? I regret not addressing the issue properly before I've just kind of plodded a lot but could and should have done more to bring my irons levels up, I'm annoyed because the doctors have sat on my results for a month and I only found out today I had low iron after asking about them at the hospital appointment, then the doctor quickly prescribed me some pills after realising my results were abnormal but noone informed me sooner, otherwise I could have started on the pills a month before and reduced any potential damage

The baby will take all the nutrients they need from you leaving you to suffer not the baby.

I wasn't actually told I was low in iron until about 30 weeks even though they knew a month before that. I wasn't impressed as I had been frequently low in iron since a teen and it never resolved itself in my case. (So frequent I actually had in-date iron supplements I took immediately I was informed. )

All in all I think the midwives advice on vitamins and minerals they gave me through my pregnancy was shit.

I’m in exactly the same situation. Ferritin at 8 week bloods (booking apmt) was 30 which is on the lower side. Complained about dizziness/fainting and fatigue throughout my pregnancy but bloods not taken again until week 28 and my ferritin was 6. Midwife requested iron tablets but GP wouldn’t prescribe, took me almost 2 weeks to get them and I had to go to the hospital which was an hours drive in the ice/snow. Got another midwife apmt on Monday and going to request she takes my bloods again to see if it’s made any effect. Worried I’ll need an iron infusion and it could potentially limit birth choices if it’s done too close to due date (I don’t know this for sure though - only heard from a friend but she went through the same!)

Overall really shitty experience from GP and just general maternity processes of bloods etc - I don’t want to blame the midwives because I really don’t think it’s them, they’ve always been great but just wish it had been sorted sooner.

like the above comment, the baby should be fine because they’re taking everything they need from you. But it doesn’t help you not feel like shit.

Mine came out at 3 at 28 weeks and has managed to increase to just 6 at 35 weeks. They said it should be between 30 and 300!

I'm taking the tablets they've given with vitamin c and now added in spatone too. This is on top of my pregnacare. I'm assuming it'll all be fine as they don't seem worried about baby and they're still letting me have a homebirth. It just makes you tired I think.

I have low iron and am on ferritin tablets. It got diagnosed at 30 weeks too. Not sure what my levels are like after taking them for 8 weeks but I do feel a bit more energetic. I don’t think they’ll even give me another blood test to check they’ve risen now anyway. As far as I’m aware it’s only you that it will impact, not the baby. The baby will be getting everything it needs from you. I genuinely wouldn’t worry but ask your midwife if you are concerned for your own ease of mind. 🙂
