Very small bump at 17 weeks

I’m 17 weeks and I’ve hardly got a bump, which is making me anxious as I assumed I’d have more of a bump by now. I had a MMC in July 2024, so this is my first pregnancy I’ve reached the second trimester. I’m just after some reassurance if possible please, as I thought I’d have more of a bump by now, but it looks more like bloat than a bump.

Have you been told you have a tilted uterus or are you quite tall or have a taller torso? It’s easier to be smaller.

I carried tiny all with all my pregnancies, I cried looking at all these women with amazing bumps.

Sanch1 · 07/01/2025 18:51

I didn't get a proper bump until gone 20 weeks, probably more like 23/24. It soon caught up though! It depends on a lot of things like your height and build, try not to worry.

Everyone is different. I was 25 years old and size 10 weighing 9 stone when pregnant with my first.. l didn't start showing until l was 7 months .. l was still in my size 10 levis. People at work kept asking me if l was sure l was pregnant. Eight years later size 12 with my second l showed very very early like 12 weeks.. l honestly wouldn't worry.. although it's a lovely feeling showing off a bump.
Congratulations and good luck x

I was told I’ve got a tilted uterus, would that affect the size of my bump? I’m quite tall well I’m 5 ft 8 and a size 12/14 x

I think most people are small on their first. I was absolutely tiny, second time round I'm massive already at 15 weeks .

fghbvh · 07/01/2025 18:55

I was 20 weeks pregnant and went to a wedding and people kept asking me why I wasn't drinking. Everyone was shocked when I said it was because I was pregnant as I wasn't showing at all. I ended up with a huge bump by the end, so try not to fret too much. I also didn't feel the baby move until closer to 22 weeks.

greengreyblue · 07/01/2025 18:56

I had no bump until 20 weeks with first child Normal.

anonny55 · 07/01/2025 18:56

I'm pregnant with my first and didn't really show until 28 weeks and that's with a baby that's measuring 3 weeks ahead!

Collette78 · 07/01/2025 18:56

with first my bump didn’t properly arrive until 20 weeks … I just looked a little bloated like I’d had a big dinner before that. You should be fine.

greengreyblue · 07/01/2025 18:56

And being taller means you have more space in your torso.

Yes 100% you are the same build and slightly smaller than me! Your bump will be able to stretch out more if that makes sense where as someone who is 5ft 2 there’s less area for the bump.

The tilted uterus means I carried more internally and it took longer to pop forwards. When I was full term people thought I was 28 weeks pregnant.

Silver lining I never struggled to put on my shoes, was still quite nimble at full term

Echobelly · 07/01/2025 18:58

I'm very short and was fairly slim and I was only just starting to show at 15 weeks first time, a little earlier 2nd time around.

Onechild · 07/01/2025 19:00

I didn't have a bump until really late on. I had a flat stomach at my 20 week scan. Maybe looked a bit bloated. I'm thin and short so I don't think height matters. It's just how you carry the baby.

GreenGrass28 · 07/01/2025 19:05

I'm your height and size and with my first pregnancy I didn't have any bump at 17 weeks. In fact I only told my work at 17 weeks and my manager didn't share the news and so the pregnancy went under the radar for another few weeks because I didn't look pregnant. Looking at photos, I'd say 25 weeks was when I started to look a bit pregnant. But it was really 30+ weeks when it couldn't be mistaken for bloat or weight gain and was def pregnancy belly.

I think when you're tall you tend to show later. My belly button never 'popped' either which the midwife said was because I had a longer torso.

BusySittingDown · 07/01/2025 19:19

With your first you have steel abs which hold it in! I didn't really show until 20ish weeks. At 17 weeks I probably just looked a bit bloated!

Second pregnancy showed earlier.

BusySittingDown · 07/01/2025 19:29

Just to add - I also have a tilted uterus and I'm a short arse (being short you would think I'd shown earlier).

CocoPlum · 07/01/2025 19:53

I was slimmer at 17 weeks than pre pregnancy thanks to morning sickness. As this is the first time you've reached the second trimester, your muscles haven't done this extreme stretching yet. It will come. Even at 20 weeks I only really looked like I had eaten a big dinner!

Wishing you lots of luck for a healthy pregnancy.

sel2223 · 07/01/2025 20:26

In my first pregnancy I didn't have a proper unmistakable bump until I was 30+ weeks!
Before then I just looked a bit bloated.

At 28 weeks I had a non pregnancy related mri scan and the scanner couldn't believe I was in the 3rd trimester as I had a flat stomach lying down! It wasn't until couple of weeks after that, that I finally 'popped'

Bear in mind there are some women who go through the entire 9 months with no idea they are even pregnant!

Hoofboof · 07/01/2025 20:35

Try not to worry too much! This is a terrible pic - but is my bump at 28 weeks with first baby. I’m a similar height to you. They were almost 8 pounds when they arrived.

@Penahn95 I'm 16+2, and have virtually no bump! I think it's just different for different people, everyone I've spoken to has told me not to worry 😊 It's my first, too -- I also had a MMC in July (weird!). 🌈

Scutterbug · 07/01/2025 21:37

I had a tiny bump with my first, I was still sleeping on my front at term!

Wow it’s mad how women show differently isn’t it, and how our babies can stay so tucked away, thank you for sharing this with me, you’ve reassured me x

Wishing you a very healthy pregnancy and all the luck 🥰 I feel like I’m quite anxious after my MMC. Our rainbow babies will be here before we know it I’m sure. 😊🌈

My youngest is nearly 9 but I'll never forget being in the school playground on pick up for my eldest.
A school mum said 'oh I've just found out you are pregnant, when are you due?'...
I growled '3 days ago'.
She was 7lb 3 and somehow spent the entire pregnancy (unlike my first) hanging around somewhere near my back!
My attitude was that if the midwife wasn't bothered then I wasn't.
Everyone is different x
