Appetite/ weight gain

I'm 9+2 weeks pregnant and I can't stop eating!

I've already gained about 5-6lbs which is the upper limit of what you are meant to gain in the whole 1st trimester. With the rate I'm eating I will have gained half a stone by 12 weeks, if not more.

Is anyone else really struggling with appetite? I just can't believe how hungry I am. Before this I ate a normal amount, but my appetite has just sky rocketed now and I'm struggling to get a handle on it. I just ate a share-sized pack of walkers crisps and I am having dinner in an hour 😳

I'm also getting morning sickness so this is not the best combo!

I know that extra calories aren't really even needed in the first trimester, but I am hungry all the time.

Does anyone have any tips? And will it get better in the second trimester or does it keep increasing?

For an idea of what I'm eating, today I've had:

Oats and banana
1 cup of coffee with milk
2 slices of toast with butter
Small jacket potato with beans and cheese
6x carrs water biscuits (plain)
Can of coke
Apple
Share pack of walkers crisps

...and am about to have a prawn stir fry!

Is this really bad? It's a lot more than I previously ate.

Same - I’m 8 weeks and for the past few weeks all I’ve been doing is eating and sitting around as I’m too tired to do much!
I have breakfast, then some toast and biscuits, then some other snack, then soup and bread for lunch, then prawn crackers, then some kind of other snack, then dinner and then always an orange and some chocolate in the evening. I feel like I have to continuously eat otherwise I feel more nauseous and I’m constantly hungry. It’s weird, I didn’t have this with my first pregnancy.
But my belly is definitely bigger, and it’s not baby bump. It’s actual fat I can pinch. I’m normally pretty slim so it’s a bit of an adjustment!
But, I’m hoping that by 12 weeks when pregnancy hormones and symptoms calm down so will the eating!

I found snacking sometimes helped the nausea, I just did what I had to do to get through it! I put on well over 2 stone during pregnancy but it all came back off again within 9 months. I wouldn't worry about it too much!

@Row23 Thanks for the reply. I'm so glad to hear it's not just me - I have a lot of guilt around overeating, I used to be overweight, so really struggling to accept this! I hope it calms down!

Maybe try to think of it as a temporary thing - like the chances are in a few weeks it’ll calm down and you’ll be snacking less. But also your body is literally growing another human and just needs more fuel. It’s not a permanent way of eating, just something that will last a few weeks and then back to normality :)

Exactly the same here! I'm hungry and it keeps the nausea at bay. I'm 9 weeks too.

I was a bit comforted to note that even with Christmas and this eating I'm 1.5kg lighter than I was at the same point last pregnancy. And with that one I hadn't gained an excessive amount by full term so I think some of us must just pile it on early.
I also think a lot of mine is bloating and think that will ease up and at some point tthe extra weight will be baby 😊

I've been snacking on fruit, dried mango, malt loaf and thinking at least all that has good nutritional value too.

I absolutely piled the weight on early in my second pregnancy. I was easily 10lb heavier at my booking in apt than before I fell pregnant. I wasn't massively overeating but my body just seemed to gain weight quickly. It did slow down (mainly 3rd trimester rather than 2nd) and it all came off pretty quickly after he was born. It did worry me a bit but like others have said your body is doing a lot and needs the fuel. I was conscious not to overeat too much as I didn't want to gain too much weight and struggle to shift it afterwards but in the end I think I still gained about 40lbs. my baby is almost 1 and I'm back to pre pregnancy weight now.

I was like this! I wouldn't worry. And almost enjoy it as now I'm 33 weeks and have no appetite, when I do eat I have a few mouthfuls and then I'm full. I preferred the hunger!

So don't worry it will all balance out

If it offers you any reassurance, I've had 3 children and have found I always put on the most amount of weight in the first trimester. My third baby is now 3 weeks old and during the first trimester with her I put on 11 pounds. By the time I gave birth I had put on 2 stone the entire pregnancy. 3 weeks on and I've already lost 1.5 stone of the pregnancy weight.

Some women do put a lot of weight on in the beginning and then have a gradual increase over the second and third trimester, compared to others who put hardly any weight on and then balloon out in the third trimester.

Its very common to crave crappy foods when you are experiencing nausea and eating does help with this, but this will calm down and you will go back to eating normally so weight gain won't be as quick.

Thank you all so much! I'll try to go a bit easier on myself and hopefully it will level out at some point.
